Scientists in China have discovered more than 30 mutations of the new coronavirus, which they say may partly explain why it has been more deadly in certain parts of the world.
Researchers from Zhejiang University said they had "direct evidence" that the virus "has acquired mutations capable of substantially changing its pathogenicity".
The study was written by a team including Professor Li Lanjuan, one of China's top scientists who was reportedly the first expert to propose a lockdown in Wuhan - where COVID-19 originated.
Samples were taken from 11 patients admitted to hospitals in Hangzhou, 470 miles east of Wuhan, between 22 January and 4 February during the early phase of the outbreak.
Using "ultra-deep sequencing", researchers identified 33 mutations of the new coronavirus - known as SARS-CoV-2 - of which 19 were new.
The deadliest mutations in the patients in the study had also been found in most patients across Europe, the South Morning China Post reported.
Meanwhile, the milder strains were the predominant types found in parts of the United States, such as Washington state, the newspaper said.
One mutation found in five patients involved in the research had previously only been seen in one case in Australia, according to the study.
The researchers said the findings indicate "the true diversity of the viral strains is still largely underappreciated"

In the report here yesterday, the creator of the covid virus claimed to have inserted HIV genetic material into the RNA string. We don’t know what else was inserted.
I’m pretty sure bioweapon people would start with a fairly accomplished killer from the outset. Which is why real bioweapon are Anthrax, especially the spores and Bot Tox.
If you read up on gain of function they use weak pathogens on purpose. And gain of function isn’t “new technology gene manipulation” but basically “torturing the virus” which is the natural genomic equivalent of an Opossum into behaving like a Lion. Which is why people can honestly say there is no evidence of bioengineering. Because it’s true.

Check MMWR over the years. Coronavirus aren’t even competent to be a very significant cause of the common cold.
I don’t know about any “GoF.” This virus came from bats, which are known reservoirs of any number of diseases that are deadly to humans (Ebola, Marburg, rabies, SARS, MERS). I do not know why these bat diseases are so deadly to humans, although I suspect that receptor differences between humans and bats account for some of it.
Anyway, I would hope that Covid-19 mutates itself into a less deadly form. I recall from my studies that there are a number of pathogens that were more deadly when they first emerged than they were once they had established themselves in the human population.
A vaccine to prevent the common cold has been difficult to make, primarily because there are more than 200 different varieties of viruses that can cause colds.
Rhinoviruses account for nearly 75% of common colds and there’s at least 160 different strains or serotypes of rhinovirus (coronaviruses and adenoviruses making up the rest) so making a single cold vaccine is challenging.
Additionally, unlike influenza and now COVID-19, few people have serious complications or die from “common” colds so even if a single vaccine for rhinoviruses were developed (and they are working on it) it probably would only be given to those at highest risk such as people with COPD or cystic fibrosis.
Shut Chinese virus research down. They are killing Western countries with this warfare.
This is an Asymmetric Warfare weapon not your typical WMD type pathogen which has high lethality. The drawback from using something like Anthrax can bommerang and kill you back. Asymmetric warfare is a different animal for a new type of warfare which is being widely engaged in today.

While no one could have 100% certainty either way, are you leaning toward the idea that humans in a lab were involved in COVID-19? Or are you leaning away from that, possibly in favor of "someone ate a bat"?

Mutation makes complete sense and it could explain the weird flu-like symptoms many people (like me) experienced in October, November & December. The late 2019 version mutated into the more virulent 2020 NYC strain.
It may be that China has stepped on its own tail here.
Whither China? After this, much depends on the resolve of the rest of the world, to hold it accountable. If it becomes the pariah it deserves to be, a change in government is likely. Then the question remains, how much a revolution would change China.
If the world’s nations let China off the hook, China goes on being a virus, not just exporting them. In 20 years they’ll own Africa, never mind America.
The Chinese covering it up from Nov to Jan, and allowing international flights during internal lockdown speaks volumes.

Since this virus looks like it started as a bat virus, should we be worried that it could infect bats around the world?
Bats are part of a local ecosystem (famously in Austin TX) and it would be damaging to have their population decimated by an Asian virus.
Not to mention the insects that they eat ...
It looks like hydroxychloroquine might help to relieve symptoms, which I suppose could lead to better clinical outcomes. Remdesivir also could help, but was still in clinical trials for the purpose of gaining eventual FDA approval. In other words, no miracle drug is about to hit the scene.
I do have to wonder who brought the hydroxychloroquine to the president's attention. Did he go by media reports without consulting his scientific advisors? Did they give him wrong advice? I find either possibility hard to believe, but I suppose it's possible.
Chinese scientists should know because they manufactured the covid19 to begin with.
