WASHINGTON - Nearly 60 percent of American voters say they are more concerned that a relaxation of stay-at-home restrictions would lead to more COVID-19 deaths than they are that those restrictions will hurt the U.S. economy, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
But while strong majorities of Democrats and independents are more worried about the coronavirus than the economy, Republicans are divided on the question, with almost half of them more concerned about how the restrictions could affect the economy.
In the poll, 58 percent of registered voters say that what worries them more is that the United States will move too quickly in loosening stay-at-home restrictions, resulting in the coronavirus spreading and more lives being lost.
Thats compared with 32 percent who are more concerned that the U.S. will take too long in loosening restrictions, which will harm the economy.
McInturff, the GOP pollster, says these numbers represent a powerful signal that the country isnt ready for business as usual on May 1.
Also in the poll, 44 percent of voters say they approve of Trumps handling of the coronavirus, while 52 percent disapprove.
Thats essentially unchanged from March, when 45 percent gave the president a thumbs up.
By comparison, 69 percent say they trust the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 66 percent trust their own governor; 60 percent trust Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious disease expert; 46 percent trust New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; and 35 percent trust Vice President Mike Pence.
The numbers for Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic presidential nominee, are 26 percent who trust, 29 percent who dont trust, and 42 percent who arent aware of his coronavirus statements or who dont have an opinion.

No flames here. How many illegal aliens got $1200 checks? Dead people?
My S-I-L and her Husband didn’t get a Payment. They sold a Rental Condo in 2018 which put them out of the Income Requirement. They got nailed big time on their Taxes. The leftover Money they received paid off their Mortgage and some other Bills.
They haven’t filed their 2019 Taxes yet, Their 2019 Income is way below the guidelines to get the $1,200 Payments.
They own a small Business which is closed. Their Landlord is postponing their Rent for two Months, not forgiving it (so far). The Monthly Income they receive from a CA Business Property is ZERO. Their Tenant is a small Restaurant and they are closed.
Don’t know what they are going to do if this keeps up for another Month. They are in their 60’s and 70’s. They are the owners / operators and have no Employees, so I’m not sure if they can even get a Government Business Loan to get by.
The only option left to them is to File their 2019 Taxes now without sending the $3,300 in Federal Taxes Due until July 15th. They don’t have the money readily available right now with no cash flow outside of their small SS Checks.
Hopefully the IRS will process their 2019 Return quickly so they will be eligible for the $2,400. At this point, anything will help.
Thus whole mess is on humongous Fustercluck.
So many of you on here are so polite to these cowards.
I can barely contain my disgust and disdain for them, and the things I would say to them may get me banned, so I usually choose not to say anything.
The USA would not exist if these people were on Sam Adams’ crew back in the day.
Yup. Somebody with no evidence decided it was better for us and the sheeple rush to comply
So does the county road in front of my house. Traffic is back to normal after a huge slowdown when the lockdowns were new. Then, I could go outside at 10 in the morning and not hear a sound beside the wind and the spring birds chirping. There was not a car or truck to be seen or heard and that’s very rare here unless it’s 3:00 in the morning.
Phony Tony Evers, our governor, following the directives of his DNC bosses, extended our lockdown until the day after Memorial Day (because he’s concerned for our safety...”we can’t let up now”) but I don’t think it’s going to last that long.
Or the difference is you’re 70 and some of us are younger with families to support, and careers and Whatnot. Not from being cooped up.
“If a person has a health condition that requires medical treatment, there is not a single stay at home directive that prohibits them from seeking medical treatment.”
I work in radiation oncology, I can tell you for a fact that our census has been declining since the onset of COVID19. Apparently some potential patients are forgoing trips to physicians to receive a diagnosis for problems they are experiencing. We will likely see more patients after the epidemic with more advanced disease.
Apparently some potential patients are forgoing trips to physicians to receive a diagnosis for problems they are experiencing.
I can see that happening as I know people that have rescheduled medical appointments. I would for routine medical appointments.
No doubt some of these "single mothers" (working) are faring better right now than they were working.
We have two family members BOTH collecting the federal disaster unemployment and their state unemployment. Her job is seasonal too. She gets furloughed every summer and goes back in the fall. Now, however, she is getting paid all this time. I think the Fed unemployment is $700 a week!
So some single mother who was making 40k a year, is probably doing better and not paying daycare.
