In new poll, 60 percent support keeping stay-at-home restrictions to fight coronavirus

WASHINGTON - Nearly 60 percent of American voters say they are more concerned that a relaxation of stay-at-home restrictions would lead to more COVID-19 deaths than they are that those restrictions will hurt the U.S. economy, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

But while strong majorities of Democrats and independents are more worried about the coronavirus than the economy, Republicans are divided on the question, with almost half of them more concerned about how the restrictions could affect the economy.

In the poll, 58 percent of registered voters say that what worries them more is that the United States will move too quickly in loosening stay-at-home restrictions, resulting in the coronavirus spreading and more lives being lost.

That’s compared with 32 percent who are more concerned that the U.S. will take too long in loosening restrictions, which will harm the economy.

McInturff, the GOP pollster, says these numbers represent a “powerful signal” that the country isn’t ready for business as usual on May 1.

Also in the poll, 44 percent of voters say they approve of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, while 52 percent disapprove.

That’s essentially unchanged from March, when 45 percent gave the president a thumbs up.

By comparison, 69 percent say they trust the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 66 percent trust their own governor; 60 percent trust Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert; 46 percent trust New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; and 35 percent trust Vice President Mike Pence.

The numbers for Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic presidential nominee, are 26 percent who trust, 29 percent who don’t trust, and 42 percent who aren’t aware of his coronavirus statements or who don’t have an opinion.

If it makes people feel better to wear them OK but that’s all it does.

I appreciate your advice. LOL...I wear a mask to keep others away from me.

it’s every aspect of our economy...think about public utilities, businesses are shut down, so not as much power is being used, reducing the revenue of the companies...

The people who are really suffering economically have already started to make decisions on what to pay for and what not to pay for...

30% of all renters didn’t make their rent payments on April 1, what do you think that percentage will be on May 1, probably significantly higher...

If they are not paying their rent, it only makes sense they aren’t paying the utility bills and what utility company in their right mind would shut off power to people during this pandemic...

You combine less power being used and more people not paying their bills and it won’t be long before power companies will really start to feel it...

“I’d like to see a breakdown of the income/employment situation of those 60%.”

How about also a breakdown by states. As Trump says, different states and regions have had different experiences.

Anyway, no one’s talking about un-lockdowning the whole country at once.

EMS were specifically instructed not to send old people who suffered cardiac arrests to the hospitals if they didn't respond well to initial treatment from the EMS people. This was so intensive care beds could be saved for the “far more important” coronavirus cases.
This was a few weeks back when Cuomo was screaming for 40,000 ventilators and hysterically shouting about NYC running out of ICU beds in short order.
Naturally, all that was false.
President Trump built a top notch 3,000 bed hospital at the Javvitts Center, plus another 1000 beds in the Navy hospital bed, both of which remain mostly empty. However the lockown orders still remain in force.

Michigan and a bunch other states banned non-life saving surgeries...

I have a friend that works at Mayo Clinic they are losing millions on a daily basis, the surge of Covid-19 patients isn’t happening and they can’t do normal surgeries...in fact some doctors and nurses are getting furloughed....

Yes, I understand that.

But who was prohibited from leaving their home to seek emergency medical treatment?

Good data. Queen Nancy’s expenses in her vineyard should be fairly minimal.

Their tuna gig is bringing in money. Their high end/premium restaurants are probably hurting.

At this time all tasting rooms are closed. This is killing the smaller wineries.

“Michigan and a bunch other states banned non-life saving surgeries...”

As did Texas, but one can still leave their home to seek medical treatment, especially emergency treatment.

“As for the poll, I have always theorized that if the democrat party adopted burning kittens and puppies alive as a policy plank, the media would cook up a poll showing overwhelming support.”

Theory no more.

The hospitals were prevented by order of Cuomo/DeBlasio from treating all kinds of diseases that affect mostly old folks and required intensive care, including heart disease, urgent hip replacements etc. It was part of the lockdown diktats.
And it's not just in New York either Other blue states did the same. You gotta have coronavirus to get priority ICU beds.

How did we know since the middle ages who was healthy or who was sick?

Are the tasting rooms closed to retail sales? I figured they were no longer selling samples, but again, it adds to the bottom line as there is no labor to pour and only minimal labor to stock and cashier.

Regardless, if Nancy can afford 2-Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezers, she isn’t hurting.

. If someone is rude enough not to cover their sneeze then nothing will help.’

If the person sneezing is wearing a mask, common sense tells me it will reduce the distance of his sneeze particulate.

Yes, Texas did the same thing by prohibiting elective medical procedures.

Amen!

If 60% of the people want to stay-at-home,

THEN, STAY AT HOME...AND LEAVE ME THE HE!! ALONE.

First of all, I don’t believe this for a minute. But, if that is what all those people want, they probably are not essential, the 40% are probably the people who REALLY WORK, so stay home, wear your mask and let the rest of us maskless people FREE.

Let them stay at home, shelter and cower and wear their 95 masks, which should be used by a real medical person on the front lines.
