istrict of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser yesterday ordered a one-month extension of the state of emergency, as cases in the region grow at a rapid pace. They couldnt get him any other way.
Scary allegations of rising case numbers mean nothing. We need to SEE the numbers, with a breakdown showing number with mild symptoms, number with serious symptoms, number of hospitalizations, number in ICU, etc.

Early on there was a scientific paper floating around purporting to show susceptibility to the disease by race.based on receptor sites for the virus. I forget where blacks fell on the spectrum they were presenting.
Whether by genetics or lifestyle choices, blacks do seem to have elevated levels of some co-morbidities - obesity & diabetes in particular.
No, I didn't click the link .. just reading that line is practically puke inducing.
DC proper is just under 50% black.

The DC metro area is about 25% black.

Indiana is a head scratcher.
Are you sure about that? NPS has closed the visitors centers and restrooms, but my understanding is that the fields and trails are open. The Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania and Chancellorsville-Wilderness websites say so explicitly. Manassas is silent on the question, though at Manassas they could severely impede walking if they closed the park roads and parking lots.
I was at Antietam maybe two weeks ago, shortly after MD ordered its lockdown. A lot of people were out walking the grounds.
Happy for you.
That's about where the black population peaked, back in the 1970's. That was a long time ago.
The current estimate for DC proper is about 47 percent black, 45 percent white (37 percent non-Hispanic white), four percent Asian, and loose change from all other groups and "mixed." For the DC metro area (not including Baltimore, which is part of our CMSA), the percentages are 60 percent white (45 percent non-Hispanic white; 15 percent Hispanic), 25 percent black, 10 percent Asian, with some loose change from other groups.
Just for the record, a lot of our black population is highly educated and affluent; don't make the lazy assumption that black and urban is a codeword for poor. We still have our Section 8 crew, but they are a shrinking minority of the black population. DC is also once again growing. The city's peak was over 800,000 in 1950. We bottomed out at 570,000 in 2000. We are now back up over 700,000, and there is a serious housing crunch. The population growth is overwhelmingly young, educated, professional, and affluent. The newcomers are of all races but are predominately white with a lot of Asians (both south and east Asian) and with black and Hispanic college educated folks well-represented. IOW, we're not a welfare magnet any more, and haven't been for a long time.
DC proper now has gentrification on steroids, so the poor population is rapidly being displaced. Our suburban wusses for decades thought that DC could serve as the regional dumping ground while they practiced exclusionary zoning. They are now discovering that they could run but, in the long run, they couldn't hide. MS-13 is now a suburban gang. It has followed its markets out to the 'burbs. With Anacostia now starting to gentrify, this is only going to accelerate. The only thing holding back Anacostia is the concentration of Great Society era housing projects that were dumped there by liberal racists who built low-income black ghettos in the name of urban renewal. As these age out, this concentration will be thinned and Anacostia will take off. It's too close in not to.
Swamp about to be drained?
