Trump Declares He Alone Has Authority To Reopen State Economies

President Trump on Monday declared that he alone has the authority to “open up the states.”

Trump said the decision will be up to him “for many good reasons” — even though state governors have issued mandatory stay-at-home orders and have specific powers to do so under the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

“For the purpose of creating conflict and confusion, some in the Fake News Media are saying that it is the Governors decision to open up the states, not that of the President of the United States & the Federal Government. Let it be fully understood that this is incorrect…” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“… It is the decision of the President, and for many good reasons. With that being said, the Administration and I are working closely with the Governors, and this will continue. A decision by me, in conjunction with the Governors and input from others, will be made shortly!”

Trump did not specify what authority he would use to force states to re-open. Governors have wide powers to control their own states, and the 10th Amendment says “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

If he does so you just know that Governors who hate the President (meaning a good percentage of them) will challenge such an order in Federal court and...of course...they'll find an Osama Obama appointee to rule it unconstitutional.

Then a months long battle in the Federal courts will ensue...meaning that in some states at least it will be Governors who determine how things play out.

Cause I’d apply TODAY.

Agree, no pos science bureaucrats.

I do not think the last two should be included.

I like Jared and Ivanka. But putting them front and center just pisses off so many people I have to wonder why he does it.

Well, that’s one way to get the States to start re-opening their accompany. Trumps says this and everyone of the Dem governors will say. “Trump can’t stop me. Watch—Everyone go back to work! Trumps trying to be a dictator!”

Good question
But then the White House coronavirus with Fauci and Birx, advocated some of the harsh measures being carried out in these shutdown states

Tommie Wolf will be an early cave.

No Pennsylvania politician can observe an elevated tax revenue stream happening someplace else and look away.

I can't believe the MSM has just rediscovered the Constitution and are quoting the 10th Amendment. Good! More 3D chess.

Yes the 10th amendment could be brought out of long hibernation. The amendment that big government politicians especially liberal ones chose to ignore and pretend didn’t exist because it should have derailed their grandiose plans for intrusion of the federal government into places it constitutionally should not be.

I say let them trumpet their 10th amendment rights.American people need to rediscover this amendment and in the future apply as the founders intended. Hopefully it will not be possible to put this genie back in the bottle.

Not when he’s not the one that shut it down.

Cuomo says he wants to reopen New York A.S.A.P., so who knows.

States that don’t open will die.”

Precisely, If the rat states hold out they will whither on the vine. The DNC may tell their Governors to hold out and hope the virus cases skyrocket in the opened areas. But states cannot print money and most rat states are upside down as it is. If Trump recommends most States open up and the rats states don’t it seems unsustainable for them. Some (like mine) will try, of that I have no doubt.

Exactly. Not sure what the President has in mind. If Texas wants to start reopening, that’s within its sovereignty.

Trump plays multi level 3D to the nth degree chess with invisible pieces seen only by him while following stratagems unknown even by grand masters.

I wonder if he’s baiting the governors to declare that *they* make the call, not Trump...at which point he can lay any fallout or blame on them.

Watch how long the states stay locked down when the federal trillions dry up. Trump announces a federal reopening, no need for federal support for those sheltering at home. Anyway what’s New York and New Jersey going to do, not vote for him?

No, he's just given them all cover. If a state opens up and Covid-19 takes off again then they can say they opened up because Trump told them to. And since Trump said only he can issue the order then how can he dispute it?

The final say will be the proprietors.

Cuomo shut down all construction EXCEPT those under government contract...which means...U N I O N.

Ridiculous...Roofers, window installers, builders....no reason these should be shut down.

Things like... you can't buy seeds for your garden is insane.

Let distancing and masks do their job.

And remember....Fauci originally said forget the masks. Just wash your hands. Distancing wasn't even mentioned by him early on.

“The states have a lot of power.”

While I agree that the 10th Amendment would indicate that, I’ve also often wondered how, for example, Eisenhower and JFK could’ve sent in the the troops to integrate schools in the South against the wishes of state governors.
