Common Anti-Parasite Drug May Kill Coronavirus in Under 48 Hours, Say Researchers

Researchers in Australia report that Ivermectin, an FDA-approved drug commonly used to treat parasites, appears to be effective in treating the SARS-COV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19). The drug is widely available and can be “repurposed” for this application, doctors said.

The ScienceDirect journal, Antiviral Research, published an article by a group of Australian researchers from Monash University in Melbourne reporting that Ivermectin appears to be effective at inhibiting the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

The article states:

Ivermectin is an inhibitor of the COVID-19 causative virus (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro.

A single treatment able to effect ∼5000-fold reduction in virus at 48h in cell culture. Ivermectin is FDA-approved for parasitic infections, and therefore has a potential for repurposing. Ivermectin is widely available, due to its inclusion on the WHO model list of essential medicines. “We report here that Ivermectin, an FDA-approved anti-parasitic previously shown to have broad-spectrum antiviral activity in vitro, is an inhibitor of the causative virus (SARS-CoV-2),” the researchers write. “Ivermectin, therefore, warrants further investigation for possible benefits in humans.”

The leader of the research team, Dr. Kylie Wagstaff issued a statement, saying, “Ivermectin is very widely used and seen as a safe drug. We need to figure out now whether the dosage you can use it at in humans will be effective—that’s the next step,” Newsweek magazine reported. “We found that even a single dose could essentially remove all viral RNA by 48 hours and that even at 24 hours there was a really significant reduction in it.”

Topical treatment for scabies uses 5% permethrin cream. The OTC 1% (ok for non-resistant head lice) hasn't worked, at least according to patients who claim to have tried it. With topicals details in the delivery vehicle may make huge differences. Extemporaneous formulations with the calculated "correct" amount may not deliver the same dose, in either direction, as the commercial formulation. Proper dosage, for that species, is important and the differences are not always obvious. I knew someone who killed their cat treating feline scabies with the 5% cream. Repurposing animal rated drugs for human use would blow the FDA's gasket, but they're not all wrong on that. Someone with appropriate expertise should at least consider the particular animal drugs in question to rule out obvious, to them, issues. Something the pool cleaner couple neglected.

And there should be at least anedotal evidence the standard human drug at the standard human dosage actually works in vivo, not just in vitro. After all ivermectin, according to the articles that launched this discussion, also worked great against Dengue in vitro, but was worthless in vivo. Human trials asap, certainly! Perhaps one comparing hydroxychloroquine to ivermectin. Plenty of potential patients and plenty of idle labor available to conduct them. If it really clears the virus in 1-2 days that effect should be statistically recognizable very soon. Then can come the logistical issue of how much drug can we get how fast and just how creative we need to be with non-standard usage.

Well, get the FDA to start thinking about getting some clinical trials on the schedule and in a couple of years or so this will have some pragmatic value. /s

We did the slow kill for heartworm treatment - heartgard every 2 weeks and doxycycline 3x a day. It was under $300 for a lab and the expensive part of that was a shortage of doxy which raised the price

I thought I was the only one that did this sort of thing. Tough enough the "normal" heartworm treatment cost about $1500, but they warned that in his state, it might also kill him. I found out about the "slow" protocol, and was able to implement it. I found enough powdered Doxy to last me the year, cost me $50. I used sheep ivermectin, about $10 worth that year. When I took him back to the vet later to get checked, they were amazed that he tested totally normal.

It also is a broad spectrum vermicide when given to dogs at a slightly higher dose. But, certain dog breeds, mostly herding dogs, may have a negative reaction to it.

It can be used as a topical treatment in many species, and works well killing poultry mites when used in this manner.

I used the slow kill method in dogs that were at risk of not being able to take the treatment with a good amount of success. Doxy kills the bacteria in the gut of the adult heartworm and weakens them while the ivermectin slow kills the adults and microfilaria.

At first the ivermectin was discovered and processed in Japan. Drug companies in the US make it now the last time I was able to discern its origin.

It occurred to me today there’s got to be thousands of people who would volunteer as test subjects or control groups and get deliberately exposed to CV to see what happens and determine if this a preventative so America can get back to work. When America was attacked at Pearl Harbor who knows how many young men laid their lives down and volunteered to become soldiers for this country’s sake. Being a CV test case would be orders of magnitude safer than being a front line soldier. The important thing now is to expedite possibilities like ivermectin and bypass normal protocols.
