Trump wants NFL season to start on time, sports fans to return in August: report

President Donald Trump told major league sports commissioners in a conference call that he believes the NFL season should start as scheduled in September, ESPN's Adam Schefter and Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday.

On the call, Trump also said he wants fans back in sporting venues by August and September, according to the report. The August and September dates correspond with the kickoff to both college football and the NFL seasons.

Medical experts have not yet publicly said if that timeline is a viable one.

LSU football is supposed to open its 2020 season on Sept. 5 against UT San Antonio. The NFL's schedule has not yet been released, but the first Thursday Night game is scheduled to be played on Sept. 10.

According to a White House pool report, 12 major league commissioners were on the conference call with Trump, including NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

Mark Emmert, the president of the NCAA, was notably not on the call.

I’m betting IF this mess has slowed considerably even at the end of June, they’ll play.
That leaves a month of practice.

I imagine individuals are working out on their own or maybe in very small groups.

I don’t know the schedules for colleges, but, NFL training camps normally open up around July 20th, with the first exhibition games taking place by the first weekend of August. So if an all clear is issued by the end of June, the NFL should be able to adhere to their schedule.

I wonder though, if people are so spooked by everything, will some people be afraid to go sit in a stadium in close quarters with thousands of people?? The games in sports may resume, but will all the fans return to see them live? I know the hard core fans will watch on TV, but will ticket sales lag????

Ditto for restaurants, concerts, movie theaters, and any other place where you are sitting close to many strangers.

So the college teams will just show up on September 1, hit the field, and play a conference game? No summer practice?

That's basically how it is in the NFL now. The last collective bargaining agreement with the players union totally neutered training camp. It's cake that doesn't prep them for the season. The result: September NFL is awful, with many many upsets because none of the teams are actually ready at all. Then by October they've mostly sorted it out and good football begins.

I’m guessing by August, if the numbers have declined, the dedicated sports fan will be about ready to climb over glass to go to a game.

Not if Fauci has anything to say about it. He says we can’t do anything until there are no new cases.

Many, maybe most, NFL teams have waiting lists for season tickets. Every seat is sold. If you decide to take a season off and not buy tickets your seats are sold to someone else and you go to the back of the line for future tickets. So many people might feel forced to buy the tickets even if they won’t go, just so they don’t lose their seats in future years. Stadium might look empty but the seats are sold. The issue is parking and concessions, they would lose all of that in such a scenario. What a shame.

Everyone seems to be getting tired of watching 3 and 4 year old sports on the tely. I know I am.

It’s been fun for a time, to see some classic games being rerun, but it does get old doesn’t it?

And it depends who you are rooting for too, as far as those historic games go. For example, Yankee fans may love to see the Bucky Dent home run in that 1978 playoff game, but Red Sox fans don’t want to watch that rerun.

Ditto Yankee fans love to see the walk off home run by Chris Chambliss in 1976, or the one by Aaron Boone in 2003 playoff action. Fans of the other team, or those who dislike the Yankees, not so much.

Yes. I’m thinking by using the NFL, which the MSM can’t bash, this could be his opening gambit.
