So why the deaths?

However, infection with rhinovirus or one of the other viruses responsible for common cold symptoms can be serious in some people. Complications from a cold can cause serious illnesses and, yes, even death – particularly in people who have a weak immune system. -- The Conversation

The news is not actually reporting that a lot of these victims have secondary conditions. USA Today ran this headline:

Spanish soccer coach for Atletico Portada Alta dies from coronavirus at age 21 -- USA Today

Only when one read the story did one find out that…

A 21-year-old youth soccer coach in Spain died Sunday from coronavirus while also battling leukemia.

Leukemia?!  Leukemia affects the immune system, and the treatment also savages immunity. What killed this soccer couch was leukemia. His body was set up to die from any infection.

Admittedly a very serious cold, one which I am not saying we shouldn't take these precautions.

But there is not need to call out the National Guard for a 2 week nationwide quarantine, or whatever the latest Project Fear talking point is.

80,000 Americans died of the flu during the winter of 2017-2018 and nobody batted an eyelash because were were too busy with RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA “collusion.”

Oh, for the good old days of RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA “collusion.”

Western Civilization did not collapse with the coming of the Black Death in 1348 and that killed 20,000,000 or more people.

It did, however, cause many serious political, economic and cultural changes in society.

This is not a “cold”. Look at the x-rays from some of the victims. Their lungs are ravaged by this. Some people will barely feel sick, others will recover and be fine, others will die, still others will recover but might have permanent damage.

This is NOT a cold.

Authorities in Rome on Friday announced 5,986 new cases and a record 627 new deaths, raising the totals to 47,021 infections and 4,032 fatalities. In Spain, the death toll rose to 1,002, a highest-ever increase of 235 in 24 hours.

The only people I have ever heard of dying of a cold are Soviet premiers. /s

As far as I can tell the author of this piece has no medical credentials. Are you going to listen to some fool on the internet or to the MDs from the CDC and your state health deparments?

“This is a cold! Is Western Civilization going to collapse over this?”

No. People will rebel first.

First, its not a cold. Colds are rhinoviruses.

Second, its not the deaths that are killing the economy...its the extended sick times in ICU beds for the approx 10% of infected.

Third, this is more akin to the Spanish Flu...which was also a coronavirus and not really a flu.

Fourth, this is a lower respiratory disease. This is the kind of virus that causes you to cough and cough, and get no relief. You can cough hard enough to damage the lungs and bring up blood.

Fifth, the overwhelming of the healthcare systems is going to cause deaths in other areas. That is why it is critical to keep that curve coming down.

No, this is not the black death. Yes, this can be mild in most cases. There are good medical reasons to keep everyone distanced from each other.

Will it end the world? I am highly skeptical. It WILL make it suck for a while.

This is NOT a cold, and anyone who makes such a stupid comment should do some more in depth thinking.

It's essentially an agent of viral pneumonia, and it most definitely can kill - and not just the elderly and those with medical conditions. If you can't oxygenate, you die. Plain and simple. Whether you have a mild case or not depends on whether or not you develop pneumonia, and what extent of pneumonia you develop. There are probably a number of factors that determine this, most of which we haven't yet identified.

All that said, I do believe that we are turning the corner on this virus - primarily because we are slowing its spread, and we have three mechanistically solid approaches for targeting it: 1. Agents to alter viral shedding from cells - primarily targeted to the unique mechanism of coronaviruses to leave cells via the golgi apparatus (this is how hydroxychloroquine can inhibit this virus). 2. Agents that target viral dependence on RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (e.g. remdesivir). 3. Vaccines, in testing.

For those times when being a "it's just the flu, bro!" simply isn't enough denial...
Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

Western civilization seems to have the answer for the virus in chloroquine but it is not profitable for the pharma industry to produce in quantity. Pure greed will kill us in the end.

No Mike, (not you, Seek), this is not a cold nor is it the flu.

Frankly, it's a bioweapon. A weapon, that is, used as an extension of politics by other means.

As a tactical/personal thing, the symptoms are severe, even for those who are going to recover from it, either with or without medication.

(I'd rather not say how I know this, just please trust me that it has to do with real people in the real world.) That's why it's been reclassified as a SARS (SEVERE ACUTE Respiratory Syndrome) virus, but please note that I prefer Trump's colloquialism for it, CHINA flu.

For the last three years, China's been getting their butt kicked in the trade/monetary war with us. They've been hoping for StormyStormyStormy, RussiaRussiaRussia, etc, to take Trump down but they just got to the point where they just decided to play their Ace in the hole...

Problem is, we're able to talk about it here but Trump can't come out and call it what it is without moving towards a shooting war. Which would blow; we'd lose some people and maybe some ships and aircraft and China could escalate by moving on Taiwan and the whole thing would get out of control... Insert Fred Thompson meme here... It would also mess up our economy which would be what China wants right now.

They want to get Trump as much as the Democrats, the media, and yes the RINOs do.

To describe it as just a hifalutin' cold is macho oversimplification and not much more, Mike.

Exposed to second-hand smoke — are also more likely to get a cold.

Yep stoner states hit hardest.
