New York officials say the states coronavirus total has jumped to 1,700, with at least 19% hospitalized. They said the number of cases will continue to rise as the state receives more test results. New York has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 ICU beds, far short of what state health officials are predicting will be needed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

High population density. This is coming for you, wherever you live. Prepare for the this illness, and the social response to it to be affecting your life well into July.
Somewhere I read that Navy’s hopsital ships will be used to treat non-CV cases, freeing more regular hospital beds for CV cases.
"So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause." Senator Padme Amidala
And remember most people in NYS who have symptoms have not been tested. That 1700 number is representative of a small number of people who had to jump through hoops to get tested.
Only 3000 ***ICU*** beds. Per reports from elsewhere, if you have to be hospitalized, chances are good you’re going to need an ICU bed.
If 19% are being hospitalized - let’s round that up to 20% to make that easy - you will have 3000 people needing to be hospitalized per 15,000 known infected. Assuming that only 10% of those 3000 people need an ICU bed (age, pre-existing condition, genetic vulnerability - safe bed), that’s 300 per 15,000 people. By the time they have 150,000 known infected, all the ICU beds will be full. And then people start dying because there won’t be any ICU beds.
150K is what, a few city blocks in NYC?
I unfortunately do know someone with this - West Coast airport police officer. Several others on the force are concerned about being infected and their tests haven’t come back yet.

This site shows all of the reported cases and their current status. It is updated as new numbers come in.
I’m not saying it’s your position, but that comment was from a goof who was obviously and disingenuously trying to minimize the seriousness of the infection, deliberately omitting that it kills people (i.e., “a cold that gives some elderly people pneumonia”).
I am almost positive that Texas Lt. Governor said that we have 85k ICU beds available. How does NY only have 3k?
Boomer Remover, You're doing it wrong.
You are basing all these projections on 19% of 1700 cases that came back positive. But there has to be thousands of infected people who are not included in that number because it’s been nearly impossible to get tested in NYS for the past month.
Once testing becomes more available all these high percentages will go down
Now tell me how much the population has increased in the last 45 years.
THE GDP has quadrupled since 1971.
Why have inflation-adjusted wages remained stagnant?
(Actually, fallen behind, because houses and food cost so much more...not to mention college.)
What matters is not percentages, but absolute numbers needing hospitalization or ICU, compared to the number of beds available for them.
There are 96.5K ICU beds total in the entire country.
How many of them are used at any one given time? Usually in our area they’re pretty full this time of year.
Right now the absolute number of hospitalized patients in NYS is 353. IC beds in NYS is 65.
The percentages may go down, but the numbers are likely to just go up for a while. And there’s a limited number of ICU beds - as someone else pointed out, there’s other needs for those ICU beds too.
I’m not saying full-out panic, but this isn’t the “only a little worse flu” some here on FR make it out to be.
Texas has 85000 hospital beds not ICU beds.
Yeah this seems to follow the same curve comparing number of guns owned by people in the us and the number of homicides each year.
I’d like to know the health profile of those who have been hospitalized. Smoker? Overweight? Took the flu shot or not? Age? Other diseases or treatments in progress? Vitamin D blood levels? Diet?
Today I heard that about half of head colds are corona virus, and half are rhinovirus.
I have a triage method that can help. As patients arrive, we will ask them who they want for President.
Those who say Bernie will go on the next flight to Cuba, where they can enjoy the ultimate communist healthcare paradise.
Those who say Biden, well they can go to China. Certainly Joe can get them hooked up just he did his son Hunter.
Those who say Trump, well there won’t be many in NY, so there should be plenty of room for Trump supporters.
And yes, this is in jest. We are all Americans. Except for the Bernie supporters, they really should go to Cuba whether they have COVID-19 or not. Friggin Commies.
