Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Tuesday the Trump administration is working with Congress on a plan that would send checks to Americans in an effort to blunt the coronavirus pandemic’s effect on the economy.

“We are looking at sending checks to Americans immediately,” Mnuchin told reporters. “Americans need cash now and the president wants to get cash now. And I mean now, in the next two weeks.

“We want to make sure Americans get money in their pockets quickly,” Mnuchin said at a White House briefing on the virus. “We want to make sure small business owners have access to the funds. We want to make sure airlines, hotels. We have an entire package.”

He said President Trump has also floated the idea of a payroll tax holiday.

Totally agree! To offset this expense, the salaries and benefits that go to Congress Critters and their entire staff(s) should be IMMEDIATELY suspended.

Do it now and the folks will expect money from the government every time there’s a snowstorm.

The government parents are giving out allowances to their children. Neat.

The problem with a payroll tax holiday is when tax time comes around people will get clobbered with a huge tax due because so little was withheld. Trying to explain the money due would have been prepaid via the withholding will fall on deaf ears.

Yes, people really are that stupid.

This is getting out of hand now. Falls right into the rats hands.

When I see the Republicans making socialist solutions to the country's problems, by wanting to spend very close to a TRILLLION dollars to mitigate it, I conclude we are never going to face up to our DEBT.

Eventually we will become deadbeats, but one thing in our favor is presently we have bigger guns and weaponry than our creditors.

PS Can you Imagine the frauds that will be coming in this Govt. giveaway to various businesses and people?- Tom

Whatever I might get would just be turned around and paid in federal, state or local taxes.

"Stupid. How are they going to spend the cash when they can’t get out?"

Rent... mortgage... car payments, etc... plenty of money going out whether you go out or not.

I think you misunderstand what the payroll tax holiday is. It’s not an adjustment in tax withholding rates that ends up being recouped by the government the following year. It’s a total elimination of the payroll taxes on a temporary basis. That’s why it “costs” $500+ billion to implement this measure ... because the government never collects that revenue, period.

Instead of checks, just an 8 pack of TP should do.

Like cyclotic, I would support some money going to those being put out of work because their governor or mayor forced the closing of the businesses they work at. The states doing this also should offer something to those people.

The money would probably best be in the form of a cash/gift card that could be used online to pay bills (rent, utilities, etc.).

Also, at least Trump is thinking of getting money into the hands of real people, instead of 0bummers buddies on Wall Street, etc...

Ok, if that’s true than it amounts to a gift to working people only. It also seems to mean an employed person will not be subject to any income tax when it comes time to file except on that portion of his income which was subject to withholding before the holiday went into effect..

I am retired but have a pretty decent income from investments, SS and my IRA. I pay withholding on this income to both the Fed and State governments. What about me?

Me, too. I would rather have tax relief at the point of earning, so they do not grab back the “assistance.”

So all the illegals get it, too?
