For most of last week, as Mayor Bill de Blasio continued to urge New Yorkers to mostly go about their daily lives sending their children to school, frequenting the citys businesses some of his top aides were furiously trying to change the mayors approach to the coronavirus outbreak.
There had been arguments and shouting matches between the mayor and some of his advisers; some top health officials had even threatened to resign if he refused to accept the need to close schools and businesses, according to several people familiar with the internal discussions.
Teachers were threatening not to show up to school on Monday. A growing number of public health experts and politicians were calling for much of the city to be shut down to curb the spread of the virus.
On Sunday, the mayor was shown a graph depicting the sharp upward trajectory of the coronavirus epidemic curve, and another showing the capacity of the citys health systems to handle the influx.
The information painted a disastrous picture of the days and weeks to come unless the mayor took immediate action.
We all realized from the public health outcomes and political reality this needed to happen, said a person familiar with the mayors deliberations who spoke under the condition of anonymity. He just had to process it himself.
A few hours later, Mr. de Blasio announced a plan for schools to close starting Monday until at least April 20. Later that evening, the mayor announced a plan to close bars and restaurants.

What I heard is that the mayor knew that no school = thousands of thugs on the streets of NYC 24/7. I’ll be curious to see the crime stats over the next few weeks.
Its a panic. Whether or not the facts say its NOT time to panic; the masses will always panic
Juvee crime through the roof .....
Isn’t it funny how quickly Teachers will bail on their ‘kids’ that they supposedly looooove so much?
*Rolleyes*
Who knew Id ever agree withe the Mayor’s first instincts. He should have let anyone resign who wanted to and kept school open. Trump should also go with his first instincts. These damn public health “scientists” will destroy us
You can release a viral or bacterial pathogen anywhere in the world outside of Antarctica, and I guarantee you it will be found in the NYC subway system within a week.
I find myself in agreement with Red Bill for once. Wall Street is getting bailed out by the Federal Reserve. Who is going to bail out NYCs other businesses?
What will happen to all the $15 or fight people with no jobs? Will we see more protests that they have the time or will they respect the no gatherings limits.
This may just prove that all of those teachers and their staff of “administrators” in multi-million dollar, union built schools aren’t all that necessary for kiddies to learn
Ray Nagin didnt order New Orleans evacuated before Katrina either. That was Bushs fault. /s
I think thats why were seeing curfews all over the place...its going to be chaos with people who have no schools or jobs or anyplace to go and stay out of trouble.
Closing everything down was massively stupid, I think.
DeBlasio wanted Pres. Trump to nationalize medical supply manufacturers. I think he should have the city take over businesses in the city as a trial run...
in order to agree with him you would have to believe hes being truthful. This from a guy who thinks the feds should take over food distribution.
Sounds like fake news!
“School kids are better disease vectors than malaria mosquitoes.”
Having raised three boys, and having had a low-level cold until they were in High School, I heartily agree.
It probably evolved there in the subway!
I think the regular ridership has built up an immunity to just about anything.
