Desperate to avoid coming down with a winter cold or worse, plenty of us will be dosing up on vitamin C supplements and doctors in China are even looking into its effectiveness against coronavirus.
Research into new and exciting uses such as battling sepsis and memory loss is also under way.
We spend more than £880 million on vitamin C supplements globally, with that figure expected to top £1.1 billion by 2024.
Its popularity is rooted in the belief that vitamin C can prevent colds a theory first set out in 1970 by Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling. He was convinced of its benefits and personally took 3g a day, although much of his research on the vitamin was later discredited.
Certainly, when it comes to infections or a virus such as flu, it is accepted that vitamin C is part of the immune response and quickly becomes depleted. It helps by encouraging the production of white blood cells that fight disease, attaching themselves to, and killing, invading microbes.
However, multiple studies have failed to back up Paulings theory of vitamin C as a preventative supplement and, according to a 2017 report by the authoritative review board the Cochrane Collaboration, the best we can hope from taking a well above average daily 1,000mg of vitamin C is shortening the length of a cold by 8 per cent about 0.4 days.
Higher doses than this have been found to shorten colds further research from the University of Helsinki in 2017 found that daily doses of 6g to 8g could shorten symptoms of a cold by 19 per cent. But in the general population, vitamin C was not found to have any preventative effect.

This is my feeling too. Adamantly so.
But I suspect in the US there would be a fight to get the hospital to do it as your loved one lays dying.
Already had some Harvard dude on here say he doesnt believe this Dr and wont believe it until Harvard or Mayo or some of the other bigs ones say it is so.
I got my Vitamin C made in Scotland.
Not true. Maybe back in the days of farming and outdoor rural living, but with most of us being indoors most of the time, we simply don't get the solar exposure necessary to get the required dose.
I used to have MANY colds/year. Had blood work done and showed "low D3". Now take 5000 IU/day. No colds......
The vitamin C that’s now all made in China?
Too much sugar/carbs (35grams)...better to eat an orange...or...just take Vitamin C...IMHO
Seems to me Lefty Ed Asner did a made for TV movie 30+ years ago about treating a disease / malody with high doses of Vit C. that Doctors at the time scoffed at. True story of sorts.
You have to start at 1000mg a day...and add 100mg a day (spreading it over a day)...work up to bowel tolerance. ..then back off a little. That’s how much you need.
S/b 1000 mg not 100 in previous post
They may claim Vitamin C doesn’t help with prevention, but seeing is believing. I literally only get about 1/10 of the number of colds I used to get since I started taking Vitamin C daily along with zinc periodically several years ago. (And that was years before I found out my Vitamin D was low and started taking that too.) In fact, the only time I got the flu since then was a time I forgot to take my C for a few days in a row.
Nicotinamide Riboside would be much more effective since the immune system heavily relies on NAD+
I take liposomal Vitamin C daily and haven’t caught one cold this winter. I know this sounds like a post hoc fallacy, but I’ve caught one or two every winter before.
This time, nothing. (knocks on wood)
Vitamins A,D,E and K are fat soluble so they stay in the body longer. Overdosing on those four is not good. The others are water soluble and can be flushed out. Daily doses are needed.
Blueberries are a good source of Vitamin K, too.
Zicam works great! Swear by it.
Fasting (when done safely without nutrient deficiencies present), intermittent fasting, calorie restriction, and vigorous exercise also boost NAD+, strengthening the immune system.
I went to get another bottle and saw a much cheaper Walmart brand version. When I looked at the contents it was missing one component. So I opted for Zicam because I don’t want to mess around right now.
...or eat cole (brassica) vegetables.
