Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is setting the stage for the upper chamber of Congress to vote on two abortion bills: One bans late-term abortion, and the other punishes doctors who do not administer proper care to children who survive an abortion.
The first bill, proposed by South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, prohibits all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy except in cases of rape, incest, and the endangerment of the life of the mother.
The second is proposed by Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, which mandates doctors "exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion."
Both bills require 60 votes in the chamber to pass a procedural hurdle, but, with Republicans only controlling 53 seats in the Senate, the future of the bill is uncertain. Democrats in the Senate shut down Sasse's Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection bill last year in the Senate.
The president condemned abortion in his State of the Union address, calling for a ban on late-term abortions. Trump invited 2-year-old Ellie Schneider and her mother to his address, invoking the toddler's testimony of being born at 22 weeks of gestation. He also called for Congress to devote $50 million to neonatal research.

Kabuki Theater. Any pro-life bills will die in the House.
This is for campaign fund raising.
Isn’t it interesting how often you see anti-abortion instead of pro-life in news stories?
I wonder how many abortions the MSM starlets have had.

Check to see how many RPM’s Harry Blackmun’s casket will spin.
No it's not. The Democrats are far more likely to vote for a bill that allows abortion until birth (and beyond) than they are to vote for this.
Don’t do this stuff in an election year when it’ll just serve to get the baby killers amped up to vote. Let’s try to strengthen our hand by taking back the House and increasing control of the Senate and then go for it. We can accomplish a lot this time without Paul Ryan actively working against us.
As a retired newspaper reporter/editor, I still insist on clarity in written communications.
For this reason, I try to avoid euphemisms. I suggest that both “pro-choice” and “pro-life” are euphemisms that tiptoe around a distasteful issue.
If I was managing editor of a newspaper today, I would insist on a simple “pro-abortion” or “anti-abortion” in all copy, except when someone was quoted using the euphemistic terms.
This would be simple, direct, and leave no room for doubt.
It would contradict the Associated Press Stylebook — but then, many newspapers over the years have had their own local stylebooks to supplement whatever the AP puts out.
Much as I dislike the AP’s political slant these days, the stylebook is still a valuable guide for newswriters. But I can certainly see a place for making exceptions.
On que. This is how RiNOs pretend their conservatives in order to win re-election. Theyve done this with abortion and immigration for the past 40 years.
Yep! only 2 reasons for abortion Etopic Pregnancy where both mom and child would die, and if the baby dies in the womb with months to go before birth, a dead baby in the will decompose and kill both.
Of course it will die in the House.
And many House democrats will be on record for supporting late term abortions and allowing babies that survive an abortion to suffer.
Both of these are very unpopular.
Lose the vote now, win the House back, win the vote later.
Exactly, just the house votes on stuff that will never pass.. this is the converse... just to provide talking points for the fall campaign.
You had both houses for 2 years, and did nothing on this topic.. if you had the house again... you would almost certainly do nothing again.
I would say in cases like this where the identifier has been around for many decades that the other is political identification with the abortion movement and not an objective reference.
