Environmentalists to California Restaurants: Drop Lawsuit Over Berkeley Gas Ban
KQED ^ | January 24, 2020 | Ariana Remmel

Environmental organizations are urging the board members of a major lobbying group for California restaurants to reconsider their support for a lawsuit against Berkeley over the city's ban on natural gas in new buildings.

Organizations including the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council released a letter they sent Tuesday to the restaurants of the California Restaurant Association's board members. "By carrying out this lawsuit, CRA is positioning themselves in alliance with oil and gas industry executives, and not on the side of the majority of Californians who support solutions to the climate crisis," the letter said.

A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. The socialists are at war with business in California including small business. Ironically for liberal California the Bay Area restaurants are owned by an ethnically diverse group many who are immigrants. The environmental groups are whiter than a NASCAR crowd.

I really really would tune in to TV coverage of a California civil war.

Oil and Gas Industry Executives...

I guess they are the new Kulaks.

Always, always, there has to be a bad guy. It can’t be the entire industry, because there are workers in the industry. So it just has to be the “Executives”.

I wonder where they will draw that line, when the time comes.

Even adopting the left’s own assumption, this is crazy. Gas and electric ovens have the same “carbon footprint.”

The whole point of “climate change” is to allow the liberal ruling class to bully normal people through arbitrary and capricious regulations for their own amusement. That is the only explanation.

Well, cooking over dung fires does lend a certain flavor the the food being cooked. Psssssttttttt. Hey nrdc and sc. In case you’re interested, there is NO climate crisis. Climate does what it does. And, trust me on this one. Warming not so bad. The alternative, NOT good. You wouldn’t like it.

Just waiting for a plasma stove.

That’ll solve all the problems.

Restaurants have to have gas in the kitchens, nothing else will work in a commercial setting.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You've raised a great point that could effectively counter reactionary pc opposition to global warming.

Imagine an advocacy group encouraging/promoting global warming. How much media criticism would that create ? Yuuuuge. How many minds might actually think about the chilly alternative. Citizens migrate south to warm, snowless, comfortable climates, not just for fewer taxes.

Even adopting the left’s own assumption, this is crazy. Gas and electric ovens have the same “carbon footprint.”

This is an example of the mental capacity and intellectual capabilities of liberals in general. To them, electricity is magical and "clean". But also, coal plants are bad and nuclear power plants are bad. All fossil fuels are bad. Wind and sun are good. Liberals are too stupid to make the connection between how electricity is produced and how it is applied. To them, electric cars are "good" for the environment because smelly gas does not come out of them. Electric ovens are good because the don't use fire.

If they were really serious about this CO2 thing, they would hold their breath indefinitely.

Gas stoves and oven have a lower carbon footprint than electric, as long as the electricity is being generated by conventional sources.

With a gas stove, all of the energy content of the gas is used to generate heat, which is used directly. As long as they combust efficiently, they are nearly 100% thermally efficient.

A gas turbine, on the other hand, is not 100% efficient. A combined cycle gas/steam plant is approximately 60% efficient in converting the energy of gas into electricity. The rest goes into the air. Then the electricity must be carried over power lines to the point of use, which can have transmission losses of around 15%. So the electricity being delivered to the stove is, at best, 50% thermally efficient. Half of the energy content of the gas is lost.

This means that an electric stove has to release twice as much CO2 as a gas stove to do the same amount of heating.

The only way electric stoves make sense, from a CO2 minimization point of view, is if you assume electricity is being generated by non-polluting sources. California has a target of 50% renewables by 2025, which would make the calculation a wash. But that is not the case yet, and probably will not be the case in 2025, either.

California and the enviro residents are no longer America.

The business owners must figure that out and move elsewhere, into America

Apologies to CA Freepers

A conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.

I have heard that all my life.

Yet, most aren't.

Mugging certainly gets one's attention, and if one is liberal to begin with, the odds of flipping are good.

It does little justice to those who developed the philosophy without the requisite mugging.

I remember when all of the Hollywood types drove their Priuses claiming they were saving the world. Except the environmental impact of mining for, making, and ultimately disposing of the batteries was staggering, as it was for the multi-continental assembly process.

And, as the good people across the pond at Top Gear proved, it was less fuel efficient than a BMW M3. So I, of course, park my M3 in the “Fuel Efficient Vehicle” spot at Best Buy.

Environmental organizations not aware of how much natural gas power plants use,oh never mind it sounds like a good argument.
