U.S. health officials are currently monitoring 110 people across 26 states for the coronavirus, including the five patients who contracted the deadly infection in China and brought it back to America.
The disease, which has killed at least 81 people in China and sickened more than 2,800 worldwide, isnt spreading within the community in the U.S. and the risk to the public right now is still considered low, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, the director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, told reporters on a conference call Monday.
We understand that many people in the United States are worried about this virus and how it will affect Americans, Messonnier said. Every day we learn more, every day we assess to see if our guidance or our response can be improved.
The number of patients under investigation in the U.S. has almost doubled from the 63 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said were under surveillance on Thursday. The CDC says 32 people have tested negative for the virus.
While that number is 110, we are certainly prioritizing based on [patients under investigation] that might be at higher risk, Messonnier said.
The CDC confirmed Sunday a fifth U.S. case of the virus a patient in Maricopa County, Arizona who recently traveled to Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the diseases outbreak and where the majority of cases have been reported.
Messonnier said the CDC has screened roughly 2,400 people flying from Wuhan to five major U.S. airports and is considering expanding its screening. The agency increased its travel warning for all of China, asking people traveling to practice enhanced precautions.
This outbreak is unfolding rapidly and we are rapidly looking at how that impacts our posture at the border. Were certainly considering broadening of that screening, she said.

The German government wants to fly out all Germans from the Chinese region of Wuhan as soon as possible. According to SPIEGEL information, the Bundeswehr (German Federal Defence) should take over the delicate evacuation.
The CDC needs to protect AMERICANS and NOT wait for WHO... The US does not take marching orders from the UN

Im back in California. I came back on Saturday, Friday night, actually, came through LAX. In L.A., in Orange County, there are two cases. Why is the CDC not announcing the flights on which the patients came, the airports through which they traveled, and any public spaces they may been in? Even though I understand patient privacy, you dont want to name the hospitals, although I know one of them in which the patients are. But you do want, I think, to alert people to the flights, airports, and time and point of entry, dont you?
JI: Yeah, I think that is important, Hugh. And this way, folks can at least be aware if they were on a flight. Then, they certainly can be watching for symptoms. They can, of course, alert others that theyve been in contact with. Of course, we dont want mass pandemonium, but we do need people paying attention to this, and we need to monitor the situation very closely. So CDC, I know, is working with many of these states.
100,000 intensive care beds in the US. A third of the population is over 100,000,000...
Butt puckers kinda hard with those numbers.

(don’t bother if you are not some kind of fancy dancy gene type person..lol)
Screened them as they exited the plane? Yeah, that’s really gonna show up on tests - not. It may not show up for 14 or more days. They haven’t been testing for two weeks yet.
“Screened them as they exited the plane? Yeah, thats really gonna show up on tests - not.”
Not only that, but one doctor said some of those who have died never had a fever. So a lot of good it’s going to do to smack a digital thermometer on a forehead for three seconds.

Three arriving in San Francisco at 15:10 hours. Others arriving in Vietnam, Japan, France, etc. Are these bringing the 1000+ diplomats, their families, their staffs and their dog walkers?
Funny, I’m not finding them on the SF airport site.
“Funny, Im not finding them on the SF airport site.”
Probably because our government is lying to us. Again.
I read somewhere it can be transmitted via perspiration.
So that thermometer spreads it if they touch it to foreheads.
We estimate that, on average, each case infected 2.6 (uncertainty range: 1.5-3.5) other people up to 18thJanuary 2020, based on an analysis combining our past estimates of the size of the outbreak in Wuhan with computational modelling of potential epidemic trajectories.
There is a time and a place for simulations and statistics. It may even be prudent here. But the wide variation in results almost render them useless. Further, lots of people are gripping on to any shred of 'evidence,' and, in this case, comingling it with math/data science/simulations and making adjustments, to derive 'Gospel Truth.' Just like global warming.
I've heard lots of people pushing R0 values, presumably based on the same type of analysis and adjustment in this study. The fact is...they're all opinion. Maybe they're informed opinion...but they aren't FACTS as we're being asked to believe.
Again, for the record...clearly something is going on. We should be vigilant and monitor what's happening. Maybe we should consider restricting entrance to the USA for certain individuals.
And sure, we can listen to 'experts' tell us what liberties we should surrender for 'protection,' just like we did with Ebola and SARS...you know...the last time we were all gonna die.
Yup.
If only 5% of the infected need a bed, we have 50 times fewer beds than we’d need.
Trumps re-election chances will be harmed by his inaction in dealing with containing this, far more so than by people trying to express their legitimate concerns to the one man who has the power essentially over our life and death. But hey, you keep on hoping.
Some of us are beginning to think the lack of cessation of international travel from China to the US is DESIGNED to get us to a situation where we’ll lose our civil rights.
You can bet the Rats aren’t going to let this crisis go to waste.
Welcome to FR, cowboy.
Geez......hype much???
Your concern about our POTUS' 'inaction' is duly noted.
it got moved. they are going to canada first to be screened. Not sure how Canada feels about that
It isn’t hype, its stone-cold fact. This disease has every marker of being capable of being at least as dangerous as the Spanish flu. Right now ~20-30% of those infected seem to require intensive care. We do not have anywhere NEAR enough excess capacity in our hospitals. It’s not about beds, its about ventilators. The survival rate is decent now because those infected are getting the best care, what happens when that becomes overwhelmed? One man alone has the power to close our borders.
