California teachers sue after jetliner dumps fuel on schools

Four teachers from a Los Angeles-area school sued Delta Air Lines on Friday, saying they were exposed to jet fuel when a plane with engine trouble dumped its fuel over a densely populated area, including several schools, while making an emergency return to the airport.

At a news conference, the teachers described the fuel as drizzling down like raindrops with “overwhelming” fumes. They said their panicked students screamed and cried.

“The plaintiffs could feel the fuel on their clothes, their flesh, their eyes and their skin,” said the teachers’ attorney, Gloria Allred, who noted that her firm may add teachers or students to the lawsuit.

I’m going to disagree with you on everything. It’s the fumes that catch fire, not the gas itself. A carburetor in an auto makes fumes out of gasoline. The engine runs on the converted fumes. Gas would actually put out a fire if it is done fast enough.

I can see it hasn’t negatively impacted their appetite.

On a destroyer years ago we would be in plane guard station (2 SNX). Wasn’t uncommon during the watch to have JP-5 raining down on the ship as the jet jockeys dumped some fuel prior to landing. By the end of watch, pretty much reeked of JP-5. Didn’t suffer any ill effects from it.

Above 8000’. The plane was at 2500’ and dumping fuel, this is not allowed by FAA regulations. The pilots were asked if they needed to dump fuel and they declined, then they dumped fuel anyway below minimums. For the story see Juan Brown Blanco Lirio channel on youtube.

They did break FAA rules, no fuel dumping below 8000’ over populated areas.

It is a travesty

That will be what these women will have to prove in court.

If they can prove no damage they will lose their case

And while the plane was within Federal Aviation Administration guidelines when it dropped the fuel, experts have said the best practice is to discharge at a higher elevation so that fuel dissipates before it hits the ground.

However, FAA regulations do allow dumps at lower altitudes — at least 2,000 feet higher than anything on the ground within five miles, the agency said.

See: Juan Brown, Blanco Lirio youtube .com. I think a ATP rated 777 pilot has more credibility than the LA Times, just sayin’.

If an aircraft is dumping fuel in IFR conditions, assign an altitude at least 2,000 feet above the highest obstacle within 5 miles of the route or pattern being flown.

See: Juan Brown

...

Juan Brown is a below average pilot, if in fact he really is a pilot.

He thinks making Youtube videos makes him a better pilot than he really is.

He’s recovering from having his prostate removed and has not been cleared to return to flying.

That section references Special Flights not ATP. also surrounding terrain is an obstacle. 3rd They cabin crew never requested fuel dumping despite prompting from ATC.
