California teachers sue after jetliner dumps fuel on schools

Four teachers from a Los Angeles-area school sued Delta Air Lines on Friday, saying they were exposed to jet fuel when a plane with engine trouble dumped its fuel over a densely populated area, including several schools, while making an emergency return to the airport.

At a news conference, the teachers described the fuel as drizzling down like raindrops with “overwhelming” fumes. They said their panicked students screamed and cried.

“The plaintiffs could feel the fuel on their clothes, their flesh, their eyes and their skin,” said the teachers’ attorney, Gloria Allred, who noted that her firm may add teachers or students to the lawsuit.

Kerosene is now in play.
Never too late to sue, especially in California.

It’s not a one or the other. You can do something because it is the best option available but that doesn’t absolve you of the consequences of that decision.

Dumping fuel was the best option, but they are still liable for any consequences of dumping the fuel.

Child abusing pussies. That’s their way of celebrating that a few hundred people didn’t die in a fireball.

Utterly low life.

Exactly. Used to use kerosene all the time to clean paint off my hands.

I see you’ve never tried to set jet fuel on fire. You can pour five gallons of it on the street and throw matches at it... it puts out the matches.

In Desert Storm we made a fire by piling up sand, soaking it in jet fuel and getting it going. We would roast chunks of spam on it.

Still here.

“Dumping fuel was the best option, but they are still liable for any consequences of dumping the fuel.”

Which are exactly ...none. Absolutely nobody was harmed. They might have smelled something foul.

Sadly the pilots that dumped their fuel did not know their plane. Boeing specs say that the plane could land without dumping fuel. That it would not be too heavy for the design of the plane.

Yes, it can land overweight but a 777 going to Shanghai would have a lot of fuel and be very heavy. That extra weight will cause an increase in approach speed and longer landing distance which makes it harder to stop safely on the runway. In an emergency situation like that it's up to the judgement of the pilots whether they need to dump fuel or not, I can tell you that most 777 pilots would choose to dump in that situation. If you need to dump and it's not an emergency then ATC will send you to a non-populated area and have you above 6000' to do it. In an emergency that goes out the window and if you need to dump fuel you do it. Again, it's the pilot's judgement and no one else's, they decided it needed to be done to ensure the safe operation of the aircraft and then they landed safely. They did their jobs well and thankfully one of the few principles that the FAA still respects is a pilots exercise of his emergency authority.

Jet fuel is just kerosene, it's not going to hurt a thing and this is just a frivolous lawsuit, which should be obvious from Gloria Allred's presence. Unfortunately it's California so these gold diggers might get somewhere.

It’s the fumes that will ignite and airline fuel has very strong fumes. My father worked with gasoline and told me gas would put out the match, like you said. I wouldn’t light a match and hold it by a spill.

The Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego is beside the airport. Aviation fuel fumes was a part of life. It ruined the paint on our cars. We it and treated it like gravity- can’t escape it/ just get used to it.

No, this is very important. Gasoline will NOT put out a match. This is no joke, your dad was wrong and do NOT try it.

Jet fuel is very different. And a spray from 2000 feet will not have the required fuel air mixture. Think of it like a fart. An inch away, you can light it. But even though it stinks up a whole room, you cannot detonate the room with a match 5 feet away.

It’s like that.

First show me the consequences,
; we used diesel/kerosene/jet fuel, any flammable fuel we could lay our hands on to burn the shitters.

Other than the stink, I don’t think anybody was permanently or temporarily injured by it.

This lawsuit is nothing but pure crybaby bullshit and a bunch of crappy teachers looking for a payday.
