Patrick Stewart returns to Star Trek and the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new CBS streaming show, but the reason it exists at all is, unsurprisingly, political. The liberal actor told Variety this week that Picard is me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump. He also said that the United States (under Trump) and Britain (under Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson) are completely f****d.
Talking to Varietys Daniel Holloway, Stewart explained why his character is getting a revival:
Trump seemed to be responsible for a lot of old TV shows coming back. In 2018, the creator of the '80s/'90s sitcom Murphy Brown explained why that show returned: We definitely wouldn't have had the show if Trump hadnt won. She added, We didn't have a motivation do it. We didn't really have the meat or a story. And then when the election happened, I mean, if Hillary had won, we would just be dancing in the streets.
Stewart connected the United States, Britain, Brexit, Trump and Johnson into one political lament:
Im not sure which one of us is in the most trouble, he says of Britain and the United States. I think its actually the U.K. I think were fed, completely fed. He points to studies predicting decades-long economic damage inflicted by the countrys looming withdrawal from the European Union. Of the U.S., he says, There is a time limit to your fed state, which is four years away. He expresses hope that the United States that has given us the Trump administration can change...
But, the actor added, He will likely get reelected..
In November of 2019, Stewart told a French audience that hes embarrassed by Brexit and thinks its a disgrace.

I'm one of the few that watched the new Murphy Brown. I believe three of the episodes followed the format of the 80s version and were actually pretty funny. The rest, however, were in-your-face, we're-on-TV-and-you're-not, so listen up numbnuts, unwatchable TV.
Pretty bad when Tyne Daly was the only one interesting on the show and she was a replacement.
We called it ST in pastel.
Imagine having the job of cleaning the holodeck. That would be stickier than the floor of a movie theater, and it wouldn’t be from spilled soft drinks and candy, either.
I had no idea Patrick Sterwart is so articulate.
lol....On Farscape they had cleaning bots.
Guess I will NOT be watching the new Star Trek.
Just started “rewatching” NYPD Blue from the pilot show and moving forward. By today’s ‘standards’ pretty un-pc. Probably was at the time as well.
The peasants are getting uppity about their betters controlling them. Picard will teach them to obey.
I hear that Trump is a bad guy.
The Pacard Maneuver: “Surrender or I will talk at you again”
My wife and I love space shows. So when TNG came out we watched some episodes but they were so boring and slow and everything resolved by talking that I gave up. In later years the show got a lot better. It had to.
But liberals got to preach. So I expect this to crash and burn. Star Trek has been done to death anyhow. Time to kill it.
B5 will always be better than Trek.
Wow, was going to watch this, now I am not, no way, no how, what a loser he turned out to be ...
TNG did not give me a good first impression.
The episode where warp drive was damaging space was enviro wacko crap.
DS9 was much better.
What did I say, nipply?
- There is a nip in the air though.
- Can I take something out for you?
A loop of Remington Steele episodes with me instead of that Pierce guy for a holodeck life.
Hes dead Jim.
