Bloomberg's campaign staff grows to 800
The Hill ^ | 01 06 2020 | Max Greenwood

Michael Bloomberg has hired more than 800 staffers since launching his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in November, according to an aide to the former New York City mayor.

Most of those staffers — more than 500 — are spread across 30 states, including the 14 Super Tuesday states that Bloomberg is counting on to propel his presidential campaign. Roughly 300 more are based at the campaign’s New York City headquarters, the aide said.

Bloomberg, who only entered the presidential race in November, has quickly shot to the top of the Democratic primary field in spending and staffing. Unlike his rivals for the party’s nomination, he’s not competing in the four early primary and caucus states, opting instead to invest in states that hold their primaries in March.

He’s also self-funding his campaign.

The heavy staffing investments give Bloomberg the largest organization in the Democratic field outside the four early primary or caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.

How much is he paying them? Are they true believers or just in it for the money?

“Are they true believers or just in it for the money? “

Bloomberg is everything the modern Democratic party hates. If the staff are volunteers, then they are true believers. However, I suspect there isn’t one volunteer in the bunch. Bloomberg doesn’t stand a chance in hell.

So who going to be the new world record holder for most spent per vote in a losing primary campaign Steyer or Bloomberg?

Jeb Bush must be smiling that he going to lose that title

Bloomberg no doubt hired capable professionals at the top and gave them a big fat checkbook to fill the ranks below them on the organization chart. The monthly cash burn rate for salary alone will be fierce.

Bloomberg thinks he has real shot. With America being a nation full of illegals and idiots he just may have one.

The burn rate may be fierce, but the pocket is deep and the ego is enormous. So it will be spent.

I have worked on various campaigns over the last 40 years and it amazes me how much of an advantage these self-funded folks have. The average candidate has to schlep for funds all the time and has to accept a lot of volunteers who are of dubious value and could be plants from the media or opposing campaigns. When you have the luxury of hired help you really cut down on leaks and sabotage.

Here in FL I am seeing a lot of Bloomberg ads - in heavy rotation during the football games yesterday. They open with Trump lashing out at the failure of Obamacare, cut to a nurse with a clear NY accent who gives chapter and verse testimony of how great it was in NYC during Bloomberg’s mayoral tenure. She brags about how many people he got covered with health insurance during his time in office. Neglecting to point out that this was done by expanding medicaid coverage with 75-90% federal dollars. What the nurse fails to appreciate is that if he were to get to national office, and he won’t, he would not have another level above him whose bucks he could spend.

He goes no where.

800 staffers, that will come to about 13 votes.

No one likes you Bloomers.

He may be using the Jeb Bush model...$1,000,000 per vote.

I too have quite a bit of political campaign experience in Florida. With exceptions, heavily self-funded campaigns tend to have poor traction because they are detached from the concerns and idioms of ordinary voters. In contrast, the effort devoted to fund-raising helps to tune up and train the candidate and to locate, organize, and motivate a candidate's base of support.

I agree with you that Bloomberg quite likely goes nowhere. Nevertheless, he has at least a gambler's chance of getting nominated by the Democrats. The lessons of experience almost always prevail, except for those times when they do not.

This is not true. He’s actually 3rd in most of the latest polls, behind only Biden and Sanders.
