Back in 2005, the U.S. Navy Tried To Sink One Of Its Very Own Aircraft Carriers
The National Interest ^ | December 27th, 2019 | by David Axe

A Chinese admiral and pundit told a trade-show audience that Beijing could resolve China's territorial disputes by sinking two U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and killing thousands of American sailors.

Rear Adm. Lou Yuan's threat isn't an empty one. The Chinese military has deployed an array of weaponry that it acquired specifically to target American flattops.

But a U.S. Navy test in 2005 proved that even if you hit them, carriers are really hard to sink.

Lou made his provocative comment on Dec. 20, 2018 at the Military Industry List summit, according to media reports.

“What the United States fears the most is taking casualties,” declared Lou, an anti-American author, social commentator and military theorist at the PLA Academy of Military Science...

..."The ship was pummeled by explosions both above and below the waterline," The War Zone reporter Tyler Rogoway explained in 2018. "After nearly four weeks of these activities, the carrier was scuttled. On May 14, 2005, the vessel's stern disappeared below the waterline and the ship began its voyage to the seafloor."

"America stood up to four weeks of abuse and only succumbed to the sea after demolition teams scuttled the ship on purpose once and for all, it's clear that America was built to sustain heavy damage in combat and still stay afloat."

Have you seen the youngsters of today... they might think that China was entitled the aircraft carrier and that they were entitled to sit on their hands because global warming is a much bigger threat. They will then say oh look a mushroom with very bright light. See how global warming caused that aircraft carrier to go boom.

“You can’t be serious.”

Tactical nukes would fly nearly instantaneously. At military targets.

It would be up to China if they wanted to go strategic.

Not a good choice for them.

We have over 1,500 nukes ready to go RIGHT NOW.

They have about 300 total.

No, YOU can’t be serious.

An attack on significant strategic U.S military forces, especially those that would dramatically alter the defense of the United States is an act of total war, unless you want to sue for peace at the onset.

JN: You raise an interesting topic.
Would we want to ‘destroy the planet’?
or ‘better red than dead’
How many boomer skippers would launch ?

I hope our threat is enough of a deterrent that we won’t have to find out.

It won't be the U.S. versus China. It will be the U.S. and most of Asia versus China. The U.S. brings the big ships, everyone else brings small ships.

U.S. big ships include four Ohio SSGN conversions with 150 cruise missiles each. Allied small ships (relatively speaking) include 40 Japanese and South Korean diesel electric submarines.

If the U.S. and allies got mad, the PLAN would have a hard time getting anything bigger than lifeboats past the 12 mile limit.

In blue water the Japanese Navy could handle it themselves.

Up close to Hainan, or in the Yellow Sea it requires the US fleet.

I know someone who was on the USS Oriskany during the Vietnam war. He was such a good sailor they gave him his own private berth. The Brig.

Japs “sank” Yorktown thrice. They got in TWO separate air attacks at Midway; she was returned to duty within hours of the first one. The second air attack put her out of commission and under tow back to Pearl. The submarine torpedo attack finally sent her to the bottom. If you count the damage at Coral Sea, the Japs “sank” her four times.

.

Sometimes you have to wonder why the ChiCom government lets their ‘admirals’ and ‘generals’ spout threats like this - but its actually policy to try to intimidate their neighbors which they hope to eventually dominate.

With this kind of aggressive stupidity spewed, all those neighbors ACTUALLY would be worrying MORE about all the radioactive fallout from the vast plains of glass and slag China would become IF they carried out such an attack. Even with obama at the helm (likely removed with the rest of the china panderers when he didnt act) the response would be to destroy every chinese military base and government center with nukes - effectively making ‘China cease to exist’ as a viable country.

A W-88 in the water just above the Three Gorges dam would likely collapse it completely.

A single nuclear-tipped cruise missile, and it’s game over for a carrier. Carriers were a game changer in WW2, they’ll be obsolete in WW3.

Nuclear? That is a game with no good ending.

Professor, how about a nice game of chess?

They STOLE, and are likely IMPROVING, the W88. Just saying. And to all the others on this thread, i.e., the cowboys and gung-ho’ers out there... they would begin, continue, and end their attack symmetrically, i.e satellite killers, suicide planes, germ and chemical warfare in our waterways and food supplies, (open borders) and domestic terror attacks. And the media, in between states of confusion and panic, would be lecturing us not to be racist and leave all asian and mooselimb people alone.

Thats because they didnt invest in nearly as much for fire control as the us ships/navy did.

Remember Pearl Harbor and what that cost the Japanese for their culture of striking the first blow.

Obviously no torpedoes were used. Else it would have been sunk without much trouble.
