That is what bothered me about the Republican nominees in the years before Trump it was always their turn to run . It did not matter if they could win or that they were right for the country. Mc Cain and Romney were losers from the start.
I believe it went deeper than that. In 2000, Bush ran against McCain. McCain got pissed off about push polling and spent Bush's first term being Sen. CNN, bashing Bush every chance he got running from liberal media outlet to liberal media outlet and becoming the media's darling "rogue".
In 2004, McCain continued the act until the two sides had a very public truce where they shared an awkward hug on stage. I believe Bush offered McCain the 2008 nomination if he'd just stop slamming Bush during the 2004 campaign. You'll notice that Bush stuck with Cheney when many thought Bush needed to find a more appealing VP to take the torch for 2008 and, through Bush, the GOP decks were cleared of Romney, Huckabee et al in 2008 to give the nomination to McCain. It all seemed a set-up just like 2016 was for Hillary.
