$15 minimum wage amendment makes 2020 Florida ballot
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | December 19, 2019 | Steven Lemongello

Floridians will vote next year on whether to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026, an amendment initiative led by Orlando attorney John Morgan that’s already drawing opposition from Republican leaders and the business community.

The initiative that will be called Amendment 2 made the November ballot after its wording was approved by the Florida Supreme Court in a decision released Thursday.

Court review was the last obstacle to getting the measure on the ballot after Morgan’s Florida For A Fair Wage collected more than 770,000 of the required 766,200 signatures.

The amendment would raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour beginning Sept. 30, 2021, and increase it an additional dollar each year until it reached $15 in 2026. After that, future increases would be adjusted annually for inflation.

The current minimum wage of $8.46 is scheduled to increase to $8.56 on Jan. 1.

The proposal already has drawn the ire of business groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Florida Retail Federation.

“This ballot measure will actually hurt the very people its proponent claims it will help," said Edie Ousley, vice president of public affairs for the Florida Chamber, in an email to News Service of Florida Thursday. "This is the poster child for a proposed constitutional amendment masquerading as a turnout weapon to impact the presidential election.”

Republicans have also criticized the proposal, with state House Speaker Jose Oliva saying in an email, “There’s nothing compassionate about mandating someone’s job out of existence and robbing them of the dignity of work. ... This arbitrarily chosen dollar figure, while applauded on the cocktail circuit, will cost working families their jobs and that is something I cannot support”

I’ve lived in Florida for 8 years now. Anything the left can’t pass in the legislature they put on the ballot as a constitutional amendment and advertise it like free candy bars. Virtually all these amendments pass.

We have voting rights for felons, medical marijuana and soon the $15 wage and recreational pot. Morgan and Morgan, the ambulance chasers par excellence push it all.

In the very least, it will increase turnout for Dems, that’s for sure.

Yes, they have one of those in my local McDonalds. Maryland loves robots, too, with its own $15 phased-in minwage law.

Yep. That’s what I said. This is all about turnout.

That’s what 2020 is all about. Look at Elizabeth Warren giving free stuff to everyone. The far-left keeps pushing for socialism. Medicare for all. Free education. Handouts galore.

They won’t be able to deliver on any of this. But it’s about driving turnout. These liberals are VERY obsessed with power right now.

This is good news for Trump. I am betting more people will go to the polls to reject this than will go to approve it. A lot more folks know that a tourist economy thrives on low-skilled labor than those doing the laboring. You can just use Bernie Sanders as evidence (had to cut campaign jobs and reduce hours for staff) when he was called out on practicing the minimum wage he preaches.

Walmart already has robots in some stores. Within a decade they will massively cut their payroll.

They know it doesn’t work. That is not the purpose. Turnout is the purpose. Same shell game as always. Lure the suckers to the polls to vote for their own destruction and give power to the very people who have built the poverty traps that have been destroying the black family ever since LBJ first proclaimed “I’ll have those N*****s voting democrat for 200 years”

Floridians. We have to kill this amendment fiasco before it kills our state. This is how California got down their path.

Here on Florida every one of these gets rubber stamped by voters.

Wow. I had no idea this was going on in Florida. So that's how the 'voting rights for felons' thing passed there...

Right. Usually these social/economic insults get the low-info voter to the polls.

Florida has a lot of Marxists and idiots down there. The Republicans and independents must unite and defeat these jerks before they wreck another state.

Voting rights for felons was an interesting ploy. The wording of the amendment was debated and the left said it would apply only to non-violent felons who had completed all terms of their sentences including restitution.

Now that the amendment has passed, the left is saying that restitution does not include financial restitution because many of these bozos owe thousands they can’t pay and that would be a “poll tax”, which is illegal and unconstitutional, blah, blah, blah. It is now in the courts.

Re: So that’s how the ‘voting rights for felons’ thing passed in Florida...

It was approved by 65% of the vote - a shocking margin since the state is 50-50 GOP-Democrat.

Trump won by only 113,000 votes in Florida.

In 2020, both Arizona and Florida will be hanging by a thread for Republicans because of massive legal and illegal immigration.

The minimum wage is the perfect democrap issue. It uses employer money to buy employee votes and costs the democraps nothing. The only people who get hurt are the small business owners who are probably voting Republican.
