Most people assume that all Southern black women are liberal Democrats who cant stand President Donald Trump.
Its a common misperception, according to Huntsville-based executive chef Merle Phillip, who says shes somewhat of a political unicorn a conservative African-American woman who got on the Trump train early on.
That train is taking Phillip to Washington, D.C., this week where shell contribute her design and culinary skills as part of an elite volunteer team who were chosen, based on work samples, to prepare the White House for elaborate Christmas festivities including dinners, parties, and tours.
Phillip said in a recent Belle Curve podcast interview that she understands why people make snap judgments about another persons political beliefs based on their race, but that she believes you should never judge a book by its cover because you just dont know.
Being part of the decades-old tradition of decorating the White House is an opportunity Phillip said shed have been thrilled to accept no matter who occupies the White House, though she agrees more with Trump than with former President Barack Obama.
Phillip, a mother-of-three grown children, said she was raised by pretty Democratic parents in New Jersey and used to be a lot more liberal. Her political views evolved as she matured and watched the country change.
She doesnt believe shes alone in that shift.
I think the tide is changing, she said. There are a lot more African-Americans
who are walking away from the old Democratic guard, which is surprising but not surprising.
I often say to people, its safe to come out of the closet. You can embrace who you are.

Gotta love Trump cause Trump loves America
Follow the Leader
He didn’t very well with black men when considering past percentages.
I think he will gain a bunch more this time.
Black women voted 96 percent hillary last time.
Hopefully some have seen the light
They’ll go for Trump, because African-Americans love strong men with style and flair. Most Republicans are like Mittens Romney.
'Diamond and Silk' have been on the Trump Train from Day One. They are a blast to listen to/watch on YouTube. As staunch Trump Supporters they've had problems with Fakebook censoring them.
Well I don’t think republicans will win all black votes. But it is nice hearing a few more are leaving the democrats behind.
Also, Trump hasn’t been pandering to the black community. He’s actually been trying to help. Some will see that and some won’t. I am thankful that maybe a few more are starting to see it.
Don't make me break my foot off in yo' a$$!!
This old question may ... “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?”
I am hoping that a lot of blacks will see through the transparent democrat worms that do nothing for them except around election time. What have the democrat in congress tried to do for anyone over the last few years? Nothing. They are the “party of empty.” They have no real solutions to improve the lives of Americans. Therefore, they just make a lot of noise with temper tantrums.
Don't count anyone out as part of a group.
They don’t even PRETEND to have platform of ideas that would help the working class or create jobs
They are just the party of hate and wickedness and lies.
“Most people assume that all Southern black women are liberal Democrats who cant stand President Donald Trump.”
Nope. Just most democrats (including the lamestream media).
Another point to consider is if they’re not MOTIVATED to vote President Trump out of office, it would really hurt the dems. The same applies to Latinos, women, labor, etc.
They may not vote for Trump but they may stay home.
Hopefully, a lot more people will be asking themselves why they should vote for do-nothing democrats.
Trump doesn’t pander and conservatives in general don’t pander.
One of these days it’s going to pay off.
I want a wall of SOUTHERN SOLIDARITY to stare down yankee socialism.
The people I want on my team are blacks, hispanics, asians, and whites. It’s about ideas, not race.
Not all black women vote Rat...but at least 90% do.To believe otherwise is delusional.

Thanks. I wouldn’t have realized I was delusional without you.
Thinking Trump will win the majority of blacks is delusional. But thinking maybe Trump could win a better percentage of them ... we don’t know. Also, if they’re not motivated to vote Trump out and they stay home, that’s a win.
If dems keep offering what they’re offering with their lame candidates, they may not be so motivated to vote for do-nothing demos.
Exactly. Not all minorities support abortions, political correctness, the gay (or pronoun) agenda, lawless open borders, nanny state, gun grabs, failing schools, intercity decay, jobs being lost because of globalist greed, etc., etc., etc.
I am with you. I don’t care what is their race. It’s about ideas.
Dems HAVE to have a negro candidate (P or VP) to get the anti-”white” vote out for them.
Racism is the core of the Dem Party support.
You are reading absolutely the wrong data.
In MS, in the two “blackest” counties, black turnout was down 8% and 11% from 2018. (2018!!!) This isn’t down from a presidential year.
This is incredibly significant.
In 2016, in NC, FL, PA, and, we think MI, black turnout was down 3% (we can prove the first three, the last seems intuitive from turnout). In these cases, the “stay at homes” were huge. They cost Cankles at least FL and PA outright. (3% in FL was = to about 110,000 votes).
So Trump’s “real” black vote was almost 10%, higher than that of Minion or W. Right now, ALL approval ratings (Rasmussen, Emerson, HarrisX are tracking a MINIMUM of black approval of Trump at 16%, and the latest two are maximums of 34%.
I have it in the middle, around 20%. Will they all vote Trump? No. But I think Trump will net gain about 3% more from 2016 (i.e., 11.5% actual) with an additional 3-5% MORE staying home (for an effective black vote of 13-15%. Could be more. That is totally destructive to DemoKKKrats.
OK, “but what about LA?” Trump wasn’t on the ballot in LA. The black support for Trump doesn’t always or even usually translate to Rs-—but it did in FLORIDA, where Scott and especially DeSantis benefited from higher-than-normal black support. This is undeniable. In DeSantis’s case, it was all due to school choice. That said, in LA, Rispone did not have such a connection to either Trump or school choice.
This is a “three step” process for blacks. Step 1 (2016): 3% fewer blacks vote for Ds, but don’t vote for Trump. Step 2 (2020): those 3% move to Trump, an additional 3-5% don’t vote, but none of them automatically vote for Rs; Step 3 (2022 or 24): 3% more blacks don’t vote, perhaps half of those who voted for Trump now vote for Rs.
Here’s how I see it:
There are plenty of blacks who don’t like Republicans but do like Trump. I’m not concerned about a poor showing from a GOP candidate when Trump is not on the ballot. A 34 % approval rating isn’t bad at all and if it translates to even 17% of the vote, it’s big trouble for the Democrats. Does anyone know what Bush-43’s approval was among blacks in 2004? I’m guessing not very high.
