Castros agents had targeted Macys, Gimbels, Bloomingdales, and Manhattans Grand Central Station with a dozen incendiary devices and 500 kilos of TNT. The holocaust was set for detonation the following week, on the day after Thanksgiving.
A little perspective: For their famous March 2004 Madrid subway blasts, all 10 of them, which killed and maimed almost 2,000 people, al-Qaeda used a grand total of 100 kilos of TNT. Castro and Ches agents planned to set off five times that amount of explosive power in the three biggest department stores on earth, all packed to suffocation and pulsing with holiday cheer on the years biggest shopping day. Macys gets 50,000 shoppers that one day. Thousands of New Yorkers, including women and childrenactually, given the date and targets, probably mostly women and childrenwere to be incinerated and entombed. (We greeted each other as old friends, gushed Jimmy Carter when visiting Fidel Castro in 2002.)

You can trace a lot of the problems in Latin America in the 60s and onwards because we allowed the communists a base from which to operate.
I remember watching the news footage at the movie theaters before the feature films show the freedom fighters in the mountains of cuba. Fighting agains Batista and his nasty crew. Turns out he may have been better for the island after all.

Chaing Kai Shek was incompetent. The US gave him plenty of help. Though the communist had shorter supply lines through the USSR.
NYC elite guuushed over Fidel and Che during their NYC visits, heavily funded them.
Just not the political will to use either.
Thanks for posting. Lessons.
These “freedom fighters” were mostly young Soviet-inspired Communist university students (often foreign born, such as Che Guevara, who was an Argentinian), and they were most certainly not fighting for freedom. They were quite brutal in their attacks on the farmers in the mountains, and succeeded in “liberating” many of them...from their lives.
The needs of the few, are to oppress the many.

“Seventeen U.S. airmen captured during the Vietnam War may have been flown to Cuba, held captive in a prison noted for holding political prisoners, and used for medical experiments on torture. “
Analysis of Milestones - Sayyid Qutb (VERY fascinating book if you have the time)
Qutbs ideological consequence has been compared to that of Hitler and he has been deemed as significant [to Islamism] as Lenin was to Communism. The sweeping influence of Qutbs work has earned him the designation of [the radical Islamic] Karl Marx and, unequivocally, the Arab worlds first important theoretician of the Islamist cause.

I know about POS qutb from previous looks at the roots of radical islam. And the roots are deep.
