A California law scheduled to take effect in January will reclassify many independent contractors as employees, and that could strip truck drivers in the state of some of their best-paying opportunities, experts warn.
According to job search website Indeed, the average annual salary for an owner-operator driver is $222,608. The median salary for a truck driver is $43,680 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Those numbers are highly misleading. Any independent trucker who makes $200,000+ per year is probably netting out less than $60,000 when you account for all the costs he has to pay out of his own pocket.
But they’re Democrats, on the side of the WorkingMan, so it’s cool!
Hi, we’re from the gubmint, and we’re here to HELP yoooooou...
Exactly, maintenance, tires, diesel, road tax, insurance, etc, etc, etc, eats up a lot of the “gross”.
California is woke. Woke = Whacked.
The Golden State has turned into the Fool’s Gold State.
The last time CA did something like this, contract jobs for High Tech vanished.
It was easier and cheaper to hire H1b.
I’m glad I don’t contract with a company based in CA!
Don’t forget DOT and don’t forget that California has an emissions law for your truck
One of my son’s runs a shipping dept and deals with truck drivers all day along.
His biggest peeve is the work visa drivers from India. They pack them 4 to a sleeper cab so they can run the truck 24 hours a day. Their English is limited to a few words and they live in the truck. He said the stench when the door opens will singe your eyebrows.
The answer is simple,it appears they are somewhat organized, just STOP Any and ALL Deliveries, Pickups,... for ANY GOVERNMENT ADDRESS in the State, and DO IT TODAY!!!
And Obama era laws mandating an electronic logging device installed in the truck, though it is less reliable than AEORD.
It is simple....you are not allowed to sell your labor privately. The government must regulate it.
The government liberals never ran a business so don’t know how businesses are run. Their salary comes from the taxpayer’s tree.
With the monthly mortgage cost of the truck and all these out-of-pocket costs, a $220,000 gross per year sounds pathetic... It may not even reach the level of the salaried drivers, but the price for being relatively independent and being your own boss is worth it for many people...
Go broke, enjoy bad health, have no freedom...you name it. If its unconstitutional we can do it.
That was my thought also.
No worries, their recently enacted rent control law will fix it.

Well, he going to show as little net as possible: his pickup truck is commonly part of the business (gotta go get truck parts!), all tool purchases, the atv (gotta get to the shop from the house), etc.
While such things are legal deductions, a tax prep woman I know said the deductions get to be almost hilarious: such as all costs relating to the dog(s). “Gotta have a security system!” I knew who she was talking about. Those were bird dogs, and lived in the house.
But yeah, the commies hate things that might “rob” the organism of financial nurishment.
