Many people are without cell service after PG&E cut power to two milllion people and wildfires burn across California.
In Marin County, close to 50 percent of all cell sites are down. In Sonoma County, 17 percent of sites are without power.
"The biggest concern is that when it comes to 911 calls, 81 percent of 911 calls are made from your wireless phone so having cell sites down it's an incredible public safety concern that consumers cannot access emergency services," said Ana Maria Johnson with the California Public Utilities Commission.
Johnson said cell towers don't have back-up power systems because cell companies are not required to do so.
The Public Advocates Office, an independent organization within the California Public Utilities Commission, has petitioned the CPUC to require cellular companies to have generators and back-up batteries on-site.

At first, the conspiracy theories that the power outages and fires were designed for force people off the land seemed outrageous. I am starting to rethink that.

I think the leftists are starting the fires. TPTB want to make CA into a techno crats dream with an approritate and docile workforce to wait on them.
How are those spotted owls doing?
Its a mixed answer...https://m.phys.org/news/2018-07-wildfire-owls-outdated.html
What did the homeless do? How about set some fires?
You deserve what you voted for.
I would have thought the tree hugging Californians would be happy reverting to 19th century living.
Friggin Russians!
My understanding is that California has been demanding money from ham radio operators for sites, eroding the technology base.
You all have figured out how to make them work without electrical power?
We are installing the fiber infrastructure to support it.
In California, copper wire carrying its own 48 volts might be a better bet. Lower backhaul capacity than fiber, but higher backhaul capacity than dark fiber.
And if you try to run out and patent the idea, be sure to disclose this as prior publication of the idea of copper wire for 5G backhaul.
The funniest thing I’ve read about was the idiotic design of solar roofs in California.
Fewer than 2% of home owners have a solar battery system, and most don’t even have the solar panel roofs connected to their home. They are designed as cheaply as possible to send power to the grid so that the family gets rebates and tax credits. And that setup lets them tap into the grid for the power demand above what solar panels generate.
The end result is that when the grid is down, 99% of people with solar roofs have no power. They can’t even run their homes during the daytime, because utilities said you aren’t allowed to wire it unless you pay a fortune and nearly none of them wanted to pay for a power wall.
Landlines don’t work when the central office power is cut. They also don’t work when telephone lines burn...
You all have figured out how to make them work without electrical power?
Nope. That aint our problem. We just lay the fiber for the antennas.

Theyre going up on light and phone poles here. But theres no way copper could handle the bandwidth requirements.

Pretty funny. Need an up vote button.
They should pay some older American Indians to teach classes on how to send smoke signals.
Marin and Sonoma.
That’s some serious money

An useful back up in an emergency.
