Should we outlaw SUVs?
Fast Company ^ | October 23, 2019 | Adele Peters

They are an enormous cause of emissions, and deadly to pedestrians? Is it time for automakers to stop selling them or cities to stop allowing them on their streets?

Over the last decade, global SUV ownership has doubled. In that time, the vehicles contributed more to the increase in global CO2 emissions than airlines, trucks, or heavy industry, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency. Even if we add nearly 150 million electric cars to the road by 2040, if SUV ownership grows at its current rate, they’ll offset that entire emissions reduction. And while they’re spewing emissions, they also have a more tangible cost: They’re more likely than smaller cars to kill pedestrians, contributing to a steep rise in pedestrian deaths.

Now some environmental nonprofits argue that automakers shouldn’t be making the vehicles at all, and some politicians are beginning to argue that they should be banned—if not from everywhere, then at least from city streets. In September, when a 3-year-old, his grandmother, and two men in their twenties were killed by an SUV in Berlin (coincidentally, on the same day that the German newspaper Handelsblatt ran a feature article about the growth in SUVs with the headline “SUV insanity“), hundreds of people protested the next day. The next weekend, thousands of people protested at the Frankfurt Auto Show to denounce the climate damage from the SUVs that automakers were promoting at the show ...

Nice. Corvette.

My dream car in a full bore challenger. I tried to sit in one in the dealer. No thanks. Wife has an 06 mustang. No thanks. I have an immaculate 71 cutlass Supreme in my garage. 6500 original miles. Family heirloom. It’s ‘OK’ not as bad as the others. But I rarely drive it. I miss muscle cars but I’m not going to shoehorn into one if I don’t have too.

I’d like an XR7 or Eliminator Cougar.

At one point, I had a base 67 model.

The top TEN selling vehicles in the US are almost all trucks and small SUVs/CUVs

https://www.foxnews.com/auto/the-10-best-selling-vehicles-in-the-united-states-in-2018-were-mostly-trucks-and-suvs

1 Ford F Series pick ups
2 Chevy Silverado
3 Dodge Ram
4 Toyota Rav4
5 Nissan Rogue
6 Honda CRV
7 Toyota Camry
8 Chevy Equinox
9 Honda Civic
10 Toyota Corolla

So, 3 BIG full size pick up trucks
4 smaller SUV’s
3 sedans, two of which are entry level vehicles that hold their value and are very economic to own/operate.

In the parking lot of my office here in NH, 4WD pick up trucks and SUVs are by far the main choice. The people who drive cars are secondary vehicles(Mustang 5.0, Audi convertible, Porsche 911, Audi Sedan, KIA sedan, Civic) As they also own a SUV or Pickup. Four guys that have the largest trucks also pull campers and boats.

A 4 door pick up is the best vehicle to have if you live in the country(I have a 4WD 4 door Tacoma). You can drive it to work(10 miles), take is to the dump on the weekend, pull a trailer, boat or camper. Haul brush, top soil, firewood, rocks, bark mulch, etc. Plus, you can still seat up to five people if needed. I would not know what to do without a pick up.

Being on old fart I’ve shrunk (about an inch shorter and several inches wider than I was in my 20’s) so I can fit into a smaller car. My wife drives a minivan because she likes the space and because it has an automatic transmission and a lot of gizmos like lane change warnings and backup proximity sensors. All new cars have backup cameras, but hers is a LOT better than the one in the ‘vette. You can actually use it at night to back up. OTO her minivan can’t do 0- 60 in 3 seconds :-)

No. The government should mind its own damned business and quit playing nanny. It has no authority to ban a particular style of motor vehicle.

A liberal guy and a liberal gal buy a Yugo.
“In a Yugo” Lyrics:
As the snow flies

At a used car lot on the edge of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo

And they drive with pride

Cause if there’s one thing that this world needs
It’s environmental friends who’ll take the lead
In a Yugo

They say, “people don’t you understand
Those suburbans are ruining the land”
But they’ll wish they had a full size van one day
They point fingers at you and me
They say we’re too blind to see
But do we simply use our heads
And choose another way?

As those small wheels turn
Fifty miles to the gallon
And their knees on their chest
They’re gonna save enough gas
For all of the rest
In a Yugo

Then one day on the interstate
They suddenly lose control
They swerve to miss a baby duck
They’re squashed beneath a produce truck

But they drove with pride...

And as the crowds drive past a little flat car
You know they saved a lot of gas
But they didnt get far
In a Yugo

And as they’re trapped inside
At a used car lot on the other side of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo....

And they drive with pride...

The only reason SUVs exist is the CAFE requirements effectively outlawed station wagons.

I remember that video of all the TAN painted Toyota pickups driving down the road in northern Iraq. I always wondered where they came from. Did the US(McCain/Obama/Hillary)buy them for ISIS OR did they raid a Toyota dealership in some city like Mosel and steal them all at the point of a gun.

Anybody know?

A total and complete fool.

There is no credible evidence that CO2 is damaging.

And nothing else in the article is worth a comment.

Why did Faux News say “Dodge Ram”? FIAT-Chrysler spun off the trucks as “Ram” ten years ago.

Any of those trucks that simply says “Ram” I call “FIAT Ram” myself. May as well call a spade a spade, as the saying goes.

CO2 is NOT a "pollutant"!

CO2 is a building block of LIFE!!

Mankind is INCAPABLE of impacting the climate!

We need to outlaw assholes who want to control our lives.

Well said. Adele sound like the type of person that wants to get on the board of a homeowners association (i.e. a malicious busybody)
