Should we outlaw SUVs?

They are an enormous cause of emissions, and deadly to pedestrians? Is it time for automakers to stop selling them or cities to stop allowing them on their streets?

Over the last decade, global SUV ownership has doubled. In that time, the vehicles contributed more to the increase in global CO2 emissions than airlines, trucks, or heavy industry, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency. Even if we add nearly 150 million electric cars to the road by 2040, if SUV ownership grows at its current rate, they’ll offset that entire emissions reduction. And while they’re spewing emissions, they also have a more tangible cost: They’re more likely than smaller cars to kill pedestrians, contributing to a steep rise in pedestrian deaths.

Now some environmental nonprofits argue that automakers shouldn’t be making the vehicles at all, and some politicians are beginning to argue that they should be banned—if not from everywhere, then at least from city streets. In September, when a 3-year-old, his grandmother, and two men in their twenties were killed by an SUV in Berlin (coincidentally, on the same day that the German newspaper Handelsblatt ran a feature article about the growth in SUVs with the headline “SUV insanity“), hundreds of people protested the next day. The next weekend, thousands of people protested at the Frankfurt Auto Show to denounce the climate damage from the SUVs that automakers were promoting at the show ...

No, it was a blood feud.

The two men had totaled the SUV’s brother while driving drunk. The girl and her grandmother just got in the way.

Those German SUV’s carry a grudge.

You can’t compare the needs of a Euroweenie in Berlin and SUVs in America.

Here we need them to haul boats, travel trailers, firewood trailers, stock trailers, and just hauling a month’s worth of groceries back home.

Go ahead and ban them for liberal pukes in the cites, they deserve to ride the subway and sit in the filth of the bum that sat there an hour ago.

SUVs are popular thanks to cars being so small.

Back in the day, when you could toss a refrigerator into the backseat of your Ford Galaxy, you wouldn’t need an SUV.

This claim is totally unsubstantiated. This guy has been drinking too much Swamp water. Steep rise? Where? It makes little difference if a 125 lb. pedestrian is hit by a 55 mph, 3500 lb. Prius, or a 55 mph, 5500 lb. Yukon. You can only be so much dead. If anything, the better overall view from the Yukon will allow the driver to more easily avoid the pedestrian.

The opposite is actually true. Very few pedestrians are killed by automobiles. Many more vehicle occupants are killed in crashes. The larger crush space and higher mass of the SUVs offer much more protection to occupants than available in littler cars.

I for one can not get in or out of low modern cars without much pain. I bought a Ram in 2014 for just that reason.

Good point. I have a very low car chosen by me for its other attributes. I don't have much trouble getting in and out, but my wife complains ever time she rides in it and outright refuses to drive it.
