Mark Zuckerberg, Elizabeth Warren spat shows cracks in liberal Silicon Valley

Mark Zuckerberg and Elizabeth Warren are clashing over her plan to break up the tech titans — a war of words that could test the limits of Silicon Valley’s liberal leanings.

The Facebook CEO was caught railing against Warren and her proposal to smash the internet’s virtual monopolies — Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple — in leaked audio of open meetings with employees this summer released Tuesday by The Verge.

“You have someone like Elizabeth Warren who thinks that the right answer is to break up the companies … if she gets elected president, then I would bet that we will have a legal challenge, and I would bet that we will win the legal challenge,” Zuckerberg said.

He continued, “Does that still suck for us? Yeah. I mean, I don’t want to have a major lawsuit against our own government. That’s not like the position you want to be in. We care about our country, we want to work with our government to do good things. But look, at the end of the day, if someone’s going to try to threaten something that existential, you go to the mat and you fight.”

Warren hit back on Twitter Tuesday, saying, “What would really ‘suck’ is if we don’t fix a corrupt system that lets giant companies like Facebook engage in illegal anticompetitive practices, stomp on consumer privacy rights, and repeatedly fumble their responsibility to protect our democracy.”

Republican strategist Patrick Griffin says Zuckerberg is right — “Warren being president would suck for every business, small or large, in this country.”

OK curse me (but not too much) but Zuck is the LEAST insane of the guys out there.

I actually remember him saying things like both sides of a political argument should be heard etc.

He’s FAR from right wing, but compared to some out there, at least he’s POSSIBLY semi open minded.

Sure, both sides of a political argument should be heard as long as both sides are in agreement with Mark Zuckerberg.

Lizzy Warren took an axe,
Gave Joe Biden forty whacks,
When she saw what she had done,
She gave lil’ Zuckerberg forty-one

The democrats are not going to break up social giants like FB and google. This is just for show to appease her base, show folks like Zuck who the master is and shake out a few more million in campaign contributions.

No, he really isn’t.

Suckburger’s open corruption in the misuse of Hawaiian land opens up an opportunity for Warren to demonstrate contrition for her stealing benefits from native American tribes. By breaking up his empire she seeks to virtue signal her new reformed (but not making actual amends) persona.

Elizabeth Warren cannot let this go.

I suspect this spat is manufactured for campaign purposes, by both parties.

Much of the land around the shore is reserved for communal use of the tribal people. You can't own it for private use or fence it off.

Zukes bribed corrupt judges, zoning commissions, and regulatory agencies to grant an exemption. Then he built a massive walled estate patrolled by armed guards.

The guy doesn't make my list of sane people, and he was probably aware when he built it that armed guards at all hours would be needed to keep bulldozers and arsonists from erasing his castle.

The guy should have bought a private island like other billionaires, but I suspect he wanted to be close to restaurants and shopping...and to rub people's noses in his wealth and power.

No company has the responsibility to protect our Democrcy idiot. First off, we are a Republic. The only way a company could actually help would be by not getting involved.

In Liz Warrens world, she sees the old Soviet Union as the great hope for the United States. A system that breaks companies, creates poverty and despair, and leads to a depressed economy is where she sees an opportunity to amass power. She was born too late. She should have been born in Russia in 1916.
