Hurricane Dorian Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 2 September 2019 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/02/2019 7:50:54 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catestrophic Hurricane Dorian was assigned Category 5 status by the NHC Sunday, September 1 at 0800. Since then Hurricane Dorian reached maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, with gusts exceeding 220 MPH, and storm surge 18-23 feet above normal tide levels as it made landfall across Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the Northwestern Bahamas.

Dorian has wrought extreme wind and flood damage to Abacos and Grand Bahama Island as it crawled slowly across the Northern Bahamas.

All interests along the Atlantic coast should continue monitoring conditions and forecasts as powerful Hurricane Dorian moves very close to the US coastline. Evacuation orders have been issued for many Atlantic coastal communities in the Southeast US. Evacuations include multiple hospitals and nursing homes along the coast with anticipated dangerous storm surge and battering waves.

Wind speed is expected to weaken and fluctuate in the coming days as the storm moves northward.

What will the initial forward speed of the northward movement be?

I turned to CNN for some comic relief and the guy they had on had never covered a hurricane before! Than I thought this has to be CNN why am I surprised!!

Martha had a gal on her show that was fed up with the "get rid of the guns 24/7 attitude" of the drivebys along with the "white racists killing black folk."

Especially in Chicago with the toughest gun laws anywhere yet the most crime and most killings. Go figure. Doesnt fit the driveby meme at all.

She gave them holy hell explaining that they don't even cover the hundreds of blacks that are killed by other blacks all year long since it doesn't fit their pre-conceived meme of:

it's all Trumps fault or racist white guys. The lady was really good.

You would not believe the number of utility trucks parked in Florida. Parking lots full. People are posting videos.

I hope that there are as many available in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. They are going to need them, too.

When Dorian begins moving again, it will start out slow at 1-2mph, then “racing” northward at 5mph. This thing is still at the Space Coast on Wednesday morning. At FL/GA border Wed. afternoon before picking up a worthy pace.

Looks like down the road we may see a cat 6 storm starting at 175,for now it doesn’t exist.
http://www.hurricane.com/category-6-hurricane.php
The amount of damage between each category does not increase linearly. Each increase in category greatly increases the damage potential. The original scale included no Category 6 hurricane. Robert Simpson has stated that there was no reason to include an additional category because the damage would be severe no matter the wind speed over 155 mph. Improvements in building engineering over the past roughly 35-40 years may have changed that dynamic and might necessitate the addition of a category 6 hurricane.
In our view, if the Saffir-Simpson scale were adjusted to include another category, it would likely be as follows:

Category 1 hurricane: 74 to 95 mph
Category 2 hurricane: 96-110 mph
Category 3 hurricane: 111-130 mph
Category 4 hurricane: 131-155 mph
Category 5 hurricane: 156-175 mph
Category 6 hurricane: greater than or equal to 176 mph

Yeah, this is still gonna be a disaster for the US Atlantic Coast - not like the Bahamas, but enough - simply because of the length of time on target... even if the center doesn’t get within 50 miles of shore.

Looks like no appreciable speed picks up until late Wednesday once it clears Florida.

It’s fascinating to me how slow the NHC is in officially downgrading this storm. The great news is Hurricane Hunters aren’t finding any winds over 110 MPH, even gusts, and yet they still have this at 140. This beast was a Bahamas story, for the US, it’s dying

Checking in from Melbourne. All quiet and calm with a few weak outer band showers this evening. Much more relaxed than two years ago for Irma. Beachside slow to board up but more done last night. No gasoline shortages all weekend while Publix here has restocked everything except for batteries over AA and AAA.

Yes. Way too much time for excessive rain along an already water-logged FL Atlantic coast. I know there has been flooding along the Treasure Coast for weeks with unrelenting August rainfall. Add to that Dorian storm surge and there are a lot of big problems looming over the next two days.
