Catestrophic Hurricane Dorian was assigned Category 5 status by the NHC Sunday, September 1 at 0800. Since then Hurricane Dorian reached maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, with gusts exceeding 220 MPH, and storm surge 18-23 feet above normal tide levels as it made landfall across Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the Northwestern Bahamas.
Dorian has wrought extreme wind and flood damage to Abacos and Grand Bahama Island as it crawled slowly across the Northern Bahamas.
All interests along the Atlantic coast should continue monitoring conditions and forecasts as powerful Hurricane Dorian moves very close to the US coastline. Evacuation orders have been issued for many Atlantic coastal communities in the Southeast US. Evacuations include multiple hospitals and nursing homes along the coast with anticipated dangerous storm surge and battering waves.
Wind speed is expected to weaken and fluctuate in the coming days as the storm moves northward.

You wouldn’t be in that kind of wind for hours. When they say a hurricane has 150 MPH sustained wind, it is only found in the innermost section of the eyewall around the eye. For most of a hurricane people in the path (mercifully) feel mostly tropical storm strength wind. Hurricane force winds above 75 MPH come next and as the eye approaches and you may be subjected to that for 30 minutes to an hour depending on how big and how slow it’s moving. Once hurricane force winds start, the wind will steadily increase until the arrival of the 150 MPH eyewall, but there may be a brief lull between the “outer” eyewall and the “inner” eyewall. The 150 MPH blasts and higher gusts will be felt only in the inner eyewall and will be relatively brief-perhaps 10-15 minutes. Of course mesocyclones within the eyewall can increase the wind momentarily to horrendous speeds and cause even more damage.
I cannot wait to see the storm chaser vides. The Bahamas are going to be devestated.
Let's try that again. Formating error. The forcast is for 4 to 6 incnes of rain and tropical force winds of 58 to 73mph max. That is enough to cause minor flooding and isolated damage to buildings and trees.

My uncle purchased the BR549 vehicle. He died several years ago and my cousin now has it. Slick vehicle.
You are welcome. Half the problem is storm surge. You don’t have to worry about that in Orlando. Some years ago I had relatives trying to evacuate from the southwest Houston Metroplex. Traffic came to a complete stop, so they turned around and went back. They stayed at a neighbor’s house that didn’t have any big trees. They had hurricane force 1 winds and torrential downpours but escaped with no damage.

NHC provides four complete Public Advisories and Discussions at 5AM, 11AM, 5PM, and 11PM. When a storm threatens land or a significant storm event occurs, more frequent NHC updates will be provided. The NHC has provided more frequent updates for Dorian than I have seen in many, many years.
So the SW corner of the eye should be passing over Settlement Point, Grand Bahama. The stall bought time, but this is when Dorian has to start moving NW away from Grand Bahama.

It has been 14 hours now with #Dorian in #Freeport #Bahamas and still this is the roof of a home there and take notice of the wind and rush of the waves of this family already on the top floor of the house!

I’ll have to check with my mother to see if anyone (alive) has a picture of it. The last time I saw it was when my uncle drove my aunt(not his wife — his sister) to another uncles’s funeral. There were ten siblings and they and their spouses are all gone with the exception of my mom who is now 86. Good question about a pic of the car, though. Someone in the family should have a picture.
Interesting info about satellite reception. I can’t imagine what interfered with our satellite on the roof during thunderstorms.
