If a seat on the United States Supreme Court opens up, President Trump must nominate a judge and the GOP-majority Senate must, if the nominee is qualified, confirm him or her.
Undoubtedly, there will be a loud and raucous chorus of voices decrying such a maneuver and we are already hearing warnings of monumental chaos if the president and the Senate majority leader were to move forward.
As the Heralds Rick Sobey and Sean Philip Cotter reported, political prognosticators fear the worst.
Both sides would be fighting it out as if its Armageddon, pollster John Zogby said Sunday. Democrats would be saying, This is the end of the world and the end of America as we know it. It would be a battle royal.

Such is the nature of politics under a system of divided government. Certainly if the House of Representatives is given the power to open Articles of Impeachment against the president, the Senate has the power to decide whether or not to hold confirmation hearings for a Supreme Court nominee. Americans should in fact celebrate these checks on the power of the executive branch, especially those Americans who profess concerns about authoritarianism.
Too many Americans WANT Authoritarianism with THEIR SIDE in charge.
I feel sorry for any conservative Christian pick. Hopefully whoever it is can deal with all the false accusations and lies.
Why I love Trump.
An idiot Romney, Jeb or Rubio would nominate some “moderate” in order to “reach across the aisle.”
Later, the same moderate will turn into an uber marxist who couldn’t find the Constitution if he/she was locked into the National Archives.
And democrats have never ONCE, reached across the aisle, on a supreme court nominee.
It is not even debatable. The Dems would confirm a justice within 90 days if they had the opportunity.
If it were purely a Constitutional question, nobody would care. But this will be a fight over ideology...............
We need a RBG dead pool.
I’m hoping we get Amy.
Angry about Garland? Bammy shouldn’t have had Scalia assassinated. So sorry.
If RBG is gone, the triggered mob of the left will go crazy. Any chance to put in a strict constitutionalist would be best for our country.
Bet RBG is not even showing up to work. You know, a dedicated public servant receiving non deserved pay to do diddly-squat.
It would be ironic if everyone has spent all this time agonizing over Ginsburg, and then something happened to Kagan or Bryer instead.
I just can’t accept that Scalia died of natural causes. I prefer to make logical conclusions but every time I do, in this case, there’s something in my mind that tells me different.
That was the deal made to call off the witch hunt. Barr was tasked with closing off any remaining loop holes and allowing possible prosecution to die.
In return, Trump will have each of his nominees confirmed; that is, if he follows the deep state's directions. We can see Trump still didn't understand the terms when he erroneously thought he might get a new DNI confirmed. Wrong!
So, whomever the deep state considers a safe pick from a power perspective, they won't have a problem with social issues. Roe v Wade means nothing to them. Spying on US citizens and other violations of the bill of rights, however, are the activities they'll to to the mats for.
Besides, as we all know, controversy is good for business. Every media outlet, including FR, benefits from the attention brought to bear by the outrage du jour. Ho hum - just watch what cocaine Mitch does. That turtle smile means the nominee will be seated after whatever process is exhausted.
We already know that the President said Amy Barrett would be nominated to replace Ginsberg.
PDJT should start tossing the name around of the nominee BO had in mind.
That ought to get liberal heads exploding and MSM digging up all kinds of dirt on him....
The more they dig, the more PDJT should dig his heels in.
THEN, at the appropriate moment, PDJT tells the world that BOs choice is/was tainted, thank the MSM and sit down and come up with another way to ‘F’ with their heads.
Absolutely, another young conservative replacing an ancient, hard core leftist will finally swing the court to the common sense side and hopefully bring Roberts along too since he would not be the deciding vote on controversial decisions. It will be beyond brutal.
He was 79 and not in good health.
And, there is NO Constitutional requirement for the circus that is the Senate Committee Hearings on the candidate(s).
Those have devolved into partisan mudslinging and sound-bite gardens for the elitists.
President should make the nomination, and the Senate can vote on it. Their damnable debate can be in the full Senate.
I think she can handle it. Yes.
