It’s not the real demographics of the senators it’s the demographics of their perceived electorate and and as what racial type (like 50+ genders) they present themselves. Thus lily white Bill could claim to be the first black president. Thus they could discount Palin was female. Both race and gender were more binary and their cards stronger in 1991.
