WASHINGTON President Donald Trump says hes very strongly considering commuting the sentence of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is serving a 14-year prison term on multiple federal corruption convictions.
Trump suggested more than a year ago that he was considering a commutation for Blagojevich, who then filed paperwork requesting a commutation.
The president told reporters Wednesday night while returning to Washington aboard Air Force One that he thought Blagojevich, a Democrat, had been treated unbelievably unfairly.

Give up something on Obama. He has served his time. If he isn’t pardoned he won’t be back in politics. What he did is nothing compared to what O and his gang have done.
He was a member in good standing of the Obama gang, and they hung him out to dry. He should have some good stories to tell.
I live in IL and wanted to see him serve time, which he has done. However, the sentence seemed excessive for a crime that was equal parts corruption, stupidity, arrogance, and ineptness (he never even got anything for Obama’s seat!).
Blago is disgraced, his family has been put through hell, and it would be an act of kindness for President Trump, who agrees with Blago on practically nothing politically, to commute his sentence in a show of good will.
I agree on Manafort. I believe he believes he will be pardoned once all this has shaken out.
Cohen will not be pardoned. Its funny; Cohen was Trump’s sleazy fixer lawyer. They have all his files, they have private conversations between him and Trump, years worth, and Cohen himself is totally willing to give Trump up to save himself... and still they couldn’t get anything on Trump. That, to me, means Trump is squeakier clean than even his supporters believe.
Manafort was in league with Podesta and them. The FBI were squeezing him to give up Trump, but he had nothing to give. He would, however, have plenty to give up on Podesta I would think. By the time he gets out he should be looking for payback. Barr should be talking to him.
What in the actual ****?
“Hes done a lot of time given what he did.”
Trying to sell a US Senate seat? No, I think he should serve his full sentence. He tried to disenfranchise half of the population of one of the largest states in the country, all to line his pockets, and even worse, he acted as if that was business as usual, which for him it was. Let him rot and serve as an example.
My thoughts exactly!
“I want him out and to start talking.”
He’s an Illinois politician, they will never talk. Omerta may be a joke for the mafia nowadays, but not for this bunch. If they talk, they lose all their fat retirement gigs that the machine sets them up with, and all the political appointments to set up all their kids, cousins, and nieces and nephews for the rest of their lives.
“because he said what they do every damn day in politics”
Oh, well, since they do it every day I guess that makes it alright.
Seriously, if Hillary, Lois Lerner, Comey, you name them , aren’t in jail, it’s hard not to not punish anyone doing lesser crimes.
[What if Blago trades commuted sentence for something - like testifying against Zero or others in Illinois?]
At least SOMEONE here is using their brain!
If Blagojevich blew the whistle on other corrupt Illinois and Chicago Democrats, it might be worth having his sentence commuted to time served.
Problem is Blagojevich is a flaky individual and his testimony may be worthless. If his tall tales are not solid, let him stay put.
Many in Illinois believe that Rezko (who kept his mouth shut while in prison) and Blagojevich was prosecuted and imprisoned to protect Obama. “Mister Clean” ran with some bad actors while involved in Illinois state and local politics.
A white guy. See, Trump is a racist.
I still believe he really in jail for the crime of embarrassing Obama. Yes, he’s crooked and no good, he’s a Chicago politician. They all are, yet they targetted him only after questions of his business deals with Obama and the selling of the seat came up. Lock him up for a long time just to inoculate Obama.
Yes, and they all do this. Maybe more subtly but they are going to make that appointment based on what benefits them—appointing a donor, for example, arranging a political marriage, whatever. What he did was nothing new or unusual. And he was talking, they convicted and sent him to jail for talking. He never did it. He never took a bribe or anything. This was personal, vindictive, and not a good day for justice. Yes, Trump should commute or even pardon him.
I think Blago would need 24 hr body guards if he was to testify against O or anyone in Chicago...
IMHO, your attitude toward $h!+h0le crook politicians, which is no doubt repeated many times over in this country, is precisely why we have the corrupt political system that we have. Crooked politicians belong in jail . . . or worse . . . ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!
I would have given the sumbitch life for his anti-gun positions and for signing illannoy’s smoking ban. No pardon.
I pretty much agree but........ what kind of juicy tales can the man tell?
Afterall, he was a run of the mill corrupt Illinois democrat that did or threatened to do something that induced the powers that be to get rid of him.
One of those powers was certainly Barack Obama
Of course, the Trump way is to dangle a tid bit that causes all hell to bust loose. That might be very interesting also
Bert, I’m so tired of waiting on justice to be served, I and most FReepers just laugh off the idea it will ever happen.
We have a Justice Department that is a laughing stock.
So I question the value of Blago even if he came clean in public.
Hillary’s treachery with her server comes to mind. It was discussed in public openly.
Justice is asleep at the switch.
There is no justice. Period.
Blago may be the one exception. Let him rot.
Trump understands.
