Power Failure in NYC

Posted on 07/13/2019 5:24:25 PM PDT by Rumplemeyer

There has been a major power failure in Manhattan, from Midtown, West to the Hudson River. Times Square is dark, no Traffic Lights or Street Lights and West Side Subway service is down. No reports of mayhem...yet.

For some of you newer freep-folks,..this is “Looty”. One of our favorite posted images on FR more than a decade ago. Was very popular here at one time.

Why?

Is the hurricane local news or national news?

1. NYC is biggest city in US, so it might be considered national news...maybe most just consider it more than local...like a shooting or hurricanes.

2. Fox is located in NYC...perhaps some of the show hosts are affected if live programming.

People would like to know...I have a cousin there, another Freeper mentioned a daughter, so it is not “crap” to everyone.

It’s an underground network transformer fire. It’s going to be awhile before Con Ed can safely de-energize and isolate the affected equipment.

Buildings which don’t have most of their load backed up on generator are hosed.

Also those manual hand wound radios that require no batteries. As my friend said when he bought one.....”But what radio station will still be broadcasting to give me something to listen to?”

I suppose the UN will bring in troops will batteries and gasoline backup power engines to make NPR still broadcast even if power to hospitals is diverted.

I didn't notice any, but I'm uptown.

They are going to allow those powered bikes in the bike lanes now. Great. Try getting out of the way of one of those things when you're crossing the street.

Best story I have read on bikes in NYC.

Don't let this happen to your city. Lefty wacko-environmentalists closed half of Times Square to traffic, did the same to Herald Square, and put bike lanes all over the place. Then they instituted "congestion pricing." They CAUSED the congestion in Midtown. They should pay whatever is necessary out of their own pockets!

NY is full of Progressives. They are probably still standing on the Escalators waiting for the power to come back on.

Squirrels chewing on lines???

That one eating meth and going crazy was so recent. Maybe that woman with the signs "You should bought the squirrel clothes" in the movie set them off.

However, they are saying "a fire in a power substation." Cover story or maybe even accidentally the truth. We should still but the clothes just in case. Can't hurt.

The reason for the increase in looting is as follows:

1965: All the shops had openwork grating in front of them.

Interval between 1965 and 1977:

Looters collected special trucks to pull the grates off the shops and stored them in garages, and went wild in 1977 pulling all the grates off.

After 1977, insurance companies would no longer insure the businesses if they had openwork grates. Everyone put in the solid ones that can’t be hooked onto and pulled off.

I’m pretty sure I have the dates right on this.

Today marks the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 blackout, which affected most of the city for 48 hours and resulted in widespread looting, fires, etc. Stay safe out there!!

Back in the day we all had landlines. Now many people have only a cell phone and if you can’t charge it....communication breakdown.
