Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro claimed during a Sunday morning interview with George Stephanopoulos that the United States already pays for the healthcare of illegal immigrants through hospital emergency rooms.
Responding to the criticism Democrats received after the Thursday night presidential debate, in which all 10 candidates expressed their support of government-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, Castro said, "Number one, undocumented immigrants already pay a lot of taxes. Second, we already pay for the healthcare of undocumented immigrants. It's called the emergency room. People show up in the emergency room and they get care, as they should. And then third, it's the right thing to do. We're not going to let people living in this country die because they can't see a doctor. That's not who we are as Americans."
Guidelines established by The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act do ensure that hospital emergency rooms provide certain levels of care, regardless of the patient's insurance status or ability to pay at the time of their treatment. Care covered is described as emergencies and specific medical screenings. However, this does not void the patient's responsibility to pay for the provided healthcare in the future.
Castro further stated that he didn't feel the views he and his fellows Democrats hold on immigration and government benefits to illegal immigrants would help President Trump win in 2020.
I work in a hospital ER in NJ. I’ve worked in two others over the last 25 years. I see this all the time.
which causes suffering for American citizens who lose a local hospital and have to travel further afield to take their children to an ER etc...
“...crimigrants...”
We need to wear this term out and use it constantly.
It is not the same healthcare. The illegal parks their ass until things settle down. You show up with good insurance and you will go to the head of the line. Of course, gunshot wounds and such being different.
“Second, we already pay for the healthcare of undocumented immigrants. It’s called the emergency room. People show up in the emergency room and they get care, as they should. The issue is 90% of the time they are not coming to the ER for are not life threatening or even major. Colds, Allergies, allot of other non-emergent things & they cannot be turned away due to EMTALA.
When I was in the ER last month for a deep cut in a finger, I was visited by a wonkette with a mobile terminal.
I paid my co-pay right there. Being a citizen means not getting a free ride in this country.
Thank Reagan for this one. They flood the emergency rooms and make them unusable for anyone else.
Just another feature of our broken world last medical system.
Yep, and being a citizen you’d better cough up your co-pay, or, you say ‘illegal’ in Spanish or Swahili or whatever and get in for free.
Instead he has continued to deport the same paltry 200,000 a year or so. The same number as barky deported starting in 2014.
Before 2014 and back to 2008 the rate was more than 400,000 per year. Before that, under shrub, the rate was about 200,000 a year.
Who is tough on deportations? Sad isn’t it?
Good one and it should be used a lot.
Dumb sap me even paid a follow-up bill after insurance settled today.
But I have a name, verifiable address, ssn, employment, and medical insurance so no choice. Besides, I try to be honest in this ever decaying society.
Every single medical bill of every single illegal alien who refuses to pay, should be sent to Mexico.
They consume and purchase products which have been taxed. Thats the extent of it.
