Trump UN pick Kelly Craft breaks with White House on climate change
BBC News ^ | 19th June 2019 | BBC News

President Donald Trump's nominee for ambassador to the United Nations has broken with his viewpoint on climate change, saying it "poses real risks".

Kelly Craft told lawmakers at her confirmation hearing she would "be an advocate for all countries to do their part in addressing climate change".

In the past, she had claimed to believe "both sides" of the climate debate.

Mr Trump has previously called climate change a "hoax" and questioned the scientific consensus on the matter.

Earlier this month, Mr Trump said climate change "goes both ways" and blamed other nations for worsening air and water quality.

In 2017, he pulled the US out of the landmark Paris climate agreement, saying the deal was disadvantageous to US workers.

Mrs Craft who is currently serving as the ambassador to Canada, had offered a similar opinion in 2017, telling CBC she believed "there are scientists on both sides that are accurate".

But she reversed that viewpoint on Wednesday, telling the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that "human behaviour has contributed to the changing climate".

"Let there be no doubt: I take this matter seriously."

She also acknowledged "that fossil fuels have played a part in climate change".

However, Mrs Craft did support Mr Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris accord, saying the US did not have to "be part of an agreement to be leaders".

She added that the US should not have to assume "an outsized burden on behalf of the rest of the world".

Mr Trump's nominee has been under scrutiny over her ties to the coal industry as she is married to Joseph Craft III, the head of Alliance Resource Partners, one of the country's largest coal companies.

After being grilled by Democrats on how she would handle fossil fuel discussions in the UN, Mrs Craft pledged

[[let’s assume that global warming *is* caused by man.]]

man’s CO2 amounts to just 0.00136% of the atmosphere- think about that- it’s such a tiny fraction of the total atmosphere that there is no way there’s enough to blanket the earth trapping heat- and changing climates around the globe- There MUST be some other source of warming- and it’s not caused by man-

For the sake of fairness and reason let’s assume that changes in the climate *might possibly be* caused by man.

There is not one scintilla of rational, logical, objective evidence that it has been or could be affected by human activity. Which means that if man is affecting it we have no idea whatsoever how we are affecting it or in what way.

To do anything at all other than continue to study the planet’s climate is wholly irrational. Real studies, not biased agenda driven activist studies.

(FWIW, IMO human activity has not altered the climate in any way)

Can’t he find someone who has the common sense to resist this climate wealth redistribution agenda and back the President?

Enough already.
Yank her nomination or look like a weakling in selecting officials.

IMO this is the functional equivalent of failing an IQ test.

Get this loser out of here and find us a non-idiot who is loyal to this country.

The idiot can’t show loyalty to Trump long enough to be confirmed?! Trump should drop him immediately and replace him with someone that can be loyal.

Buh bye, lady. If you believe that climate change garbage, it's likely you'll be on board with the rest of the U.N. scum AGAINST the U.S. on other issues. We don't need you.

There is a vast gulf between simple "climate change," and human caused climate change.

Without the clarification of which is being addressed in these quotes, it is impossible to determine if she and Trump don't agree on "climate change."

It's possible to believe that "human caused" climate change is a hoax, and believe that climate change can be dangerous.

Dullards bore me to tears.

The first thing you have to do is ignore the suns affect on the climate, throw out the volcanic activity, and forget the planet is covered mostly in water. Having done that, we can get down to the real problems like cow farts, gas engines, and meat eating conservatives who own guns. This isn’t that hard people.

"be an advocate for all countries to do their part in addressing climate change".

This might be a blessing in disguise. Most of the worlds worst polluters are exempt from the Paris Accord. China and India are exempt. Most of the pollution in the ocean can be traced back to Africa.
