There are lots of examples where the display of a weapon de-escalates a situation but people don’t want to report lest they become the criminal and their weapon is confiscated.

[ president of Plaid Pantry in Oak Grove explaining to local station KOIN-TV that the chain has a zero-tolerance policy for weapons. ]

We prefer our employees be hacked to death with a hatchet.

He doesn’t know that the thief wouldn’t have murdered the employee to prevent having a witness.

Good for the former employee.

WTF does de-escalate mean?

It escalated when a guy carrying a potentially very dangerous object entered the place with intent to rob!!

I hope the man didn’t need the job- fortunately the labor market is tight right now.

Probably would have been wiser just to let him got and not make the 911 call.

Man comes in with an axe. There is not time to “de-escalate.”

He said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury die quietly and not ask too many questions.

What a bunch of BS. The truth is, and everybody knows it, they don't care too much about their employee safety, or their customers, for that matter. They do care about getting sued by criminals though. They should reward their employee for protecting his own life.

That is not only our right, it is our obligation. I hope I would have similar courage in the same situation. And that's the real crime here - society is teaching, even forcing, people to be victims.

Better he had not called 911. Once the guy with the hatchet is gone the situation is safely resolved.

Good thing Nick Meli wasn’t working for this bum during the Clackamas Mall murders.

“During that time, Nick Meli, a concealed carry permit holder, drew his Glock 22, claimed to have taken aim at Roberts, but did not fire since there was a bystander behind Roberts. Meli claims that Roberts saw him and that this may have contributed to Roberts’ decision to commit suicide.”

the president of Plaid Pantry ... said employees are trained to de-escalate robbery situations to avoid injury

The store chain should hang a new sign: "Robbers welcome - we don't want our employees to injure you", in between the "EBT welcome here" and "Lotto tickets for sale".

Managers clearly don’t understand that clerks risk their lives for minimum wage. Screw that. Better that you lose your job than your life.

Whipping out a pistol de-escalates better than jaw-jaw.

The employee should immediately file suit for endangerment by his employer for failing to provide adequate security.

I think it is time to let everyone know Plaid Pantry does not care about the lives of its employees or customers.

Hatchet wielding robbers need not worry about being confronted. They know employees will be fired if they interfere with robberies.

I would like to see how the President de-escalates the situation after an axe is planted in his skull.

ho was armed with a hatchet when he tried to rob a convenience store, only to flee when the clerk drew a gun and called 911

I'd say the situation was 100% "de-escalated" by the gun. Freaking morons. Would they have been happy to see their employee with an ax in his head?
