The federal government recorded a $160.3 billion surplus in April as revenues for the month jumped to an all-time high. But even with a flood of tax receipts, the deficit so far this year is running 37.7% higher than a year ago. The Treasury Department reported Friday that the deficit for the first seven months of the budget year that began Oct. 1 totals $530.9 billion, compared to a deficit of $385.5 billion for the same period a year ago.

The Trump administration projected in March that this year’s deficit will hit $1.1 trillion, up from last year’s deficit of $779 billion. The administration is projecting the deficit will stay above $1 trillion for four straight years before starting to decline for the rest of the decade.

A declining deficit is always 5 years away.

Totally unexpected! Conservative policies improve the economy—without even a magic wand? Who would’ve thunk it?

Doesn’t the House remind us continuously that it is they who hold the purse? Why would this be Trump’s fault when he can’t even get them to fund the things they already approved (i.e., the border)?

So far this year, receipts are up 1.8 percent to $2 trillion while spending is up 7.6% to $2.57 trillion.

This explains it all, though they try to blame the tax cuts.

So, we have record tax collections, near record high employment, near record low interest rates, and no shooting wars, and we are going to run a $1.1 trillion deficit?

And this is good news?

Bottom Line....

When you’re broke, nothing else matters!

“A declining deficit is always 5 years away. “

But I trust Trump to do it.

Oh Lord, trillion dollar deficits for FIVE YEARS?? You can bet the Democrats will make this a huge issue during the election. Both parties are responsible for this catastrophe. Neither one wants to make the hard decisions. There will come a time when there will be no choice. You cannot maintain massive entitlements and a massive military at the same time. One or the other will have to be cut. And if the Democrats create a massive new entitlement program with Medicaid or whatever else they come up with, that will only hasten the inevitable. It is either start reducing and cutting or fall into governmental default. That choice now looks like the only solution for these cowards in Congress and the ignorant American population.

...

The Reagan years had deficits, good economic growth, and declining inflation. Eventually the Soviet Union was defeated and the budget was balanced.

I think their definition of “surplus” is different from mine.

I’m not so sure they’ll make it a campaign issue. The people who vote D are clueless about so many things. I doubt half of them even comprehend what the word “deficit” means.

Obama left the military in bad shape. President Trump had to spend heavily to fix it.

I never thought I’d see the day when conservatives loudly cheer the government taking in more than it had spent. In other words surplus = theft of American’s money.

Oh I must be mistaken, “you didn’t make that”

It’s impossible to get elected on a cut spending platform.

It’s impossible to build new high voltage transmission lines, where none exist.

It’s impossible to cure sexual perversion, and other mental illness.

Some things are plainly impossible, unless there’s fear.

The budget was never balanced. That was just government math.

Government math applied to all the budgets, so the relative improvement was real.
