The death toll has jumped to 41 people, including two children, who were killed Sunday in a fiery airplane accident at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, a spokeswoman for the Russian Investigative Committee said. The Sukhoi SSJ100 operated by national airline Aeroflot had 78 passengers and five crew members on board when it touched down and sped down a runway spewing huge flames and black smoke.
According to Russian news agencies, the plane had taken off for the northern city of Murmansk, but a fire broke out while the flight was airborne. Social media videos show the plane engulfed in flames after it landed. Some news reports cited sources as saying the plane bounced several times during the landing.
Emergency vehicles arrived at the airport to assist passengers moving away from the plane some holding luggage and fight the flames, which were coming out of the airplane's rear section. It's unclear what caused the fire.

They don't know what caused the fire.
You take your chances any time you get on a Russian airplane, let’s be honest.
They say some electrical malfunction. Its a one year old Sukhoi plane model, which Russia was planning to sell internationally on the cheap as a low cost alternative to Boeing-Airbus models *sigh* .
Very sad. Prayers for the families. And anybody in the air. These are interesting times for air travel.
My guess is junk on the runway sucked into an engine. That is what killed the Concord if I remember correctly.
” a fire broke out while the flight was airborne. “
So it wasn’t anything sucked in on the ground.
Or a Boeing plane.
Agreed. But unless massive shifts in ethics happen, its looking this way for Boeing too and other formerly trusted entities as well. With China and others also now in the commercial airliner mix, there is going to be a manufacturing race for low-cost/low-fuel options for flight (at the expense of safety) with the flying caught in the middle.
It could be they did not notice the fire until it was airborn. Who is to say how long it was burning before somebody noticed?
Well, Boeing was involved in the development of the plane.
flying public caught in the middle* I meant.
assist passengers moving away from the plane some holding luggage
I saw a video of passengers running away with their carry-ons. I wonder how many died at the back of the plane because someone at the front stopped to grab his bag.
Someone fell asleep during the Safety Lecture.
Years in the making...

Tell that to the 737 passengers.
Good idea, airline industry.
Now, in addition to getting a public exam of our privates by your “security” people, we get to risk blowing ourselves up every time we use your product.
Why would anyone fly anywhere?
If my family moves too far away, they come to see me... or they don’t see me, because I don’t go anywhere I can’t reach by car.
At the risk of sounding like Willie Green, it’s one reason I do prefer trains.
That fkg sucks!
The last thing Boeing offered in that size range was the 717, and they haven't made that in a good while. At one point this was going to be Boeing's entry into the Regional market. It competes with Embraer and the CRJ. Some folks might go with the Airbus 319 instead of this size, but it does have about a 25 to 50% greater capacity than the largest RRJ.
Russia has good trains at least. Its America that has Amtrak.
Don’t mean to sound callous, it’s a tragedy to be sure but this the reality of Russia, Soviet and post Soviet. Their technology is horrible and their regard for human safety is even worse.
