Some U.S. House Democrats on Thursday said they might seek to invoke a dormant congressional power to impose fines on Attorney General William Barr after he refused to provide them with an unredacted copy of the Mueller report.
Discussion of using their inherent contempt power came after Barr also refused to appear at a House of Representatives Judiciary Committee hearing meant to delve into his handling of the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Congress power will not be abdicated. We will enforce it, Democrat Ted Lieu told reporters in remarks that reflected a growing view among some Democrats that President Donald Trump is challenging the basic oversight role of Congress.
We can start imposing fines on that person immediately upon contempt off the House floor. And we will go there if he does not cooperate, said Lieu, a House Judiciary Committee member.
The Trump administrations efforts to stonewall several congressional probes of the president, his family and his businesses are pushing congressional Democrats to explore options to enforce subpoenas.
The unprecedented imposition of fines would represent an aggressive counter attack to the Trump administration.
A contempt citation is a legal tool to put some bite into their investigations, though it is not often used.
A contempt finding requires majority votes by the committee involved and then the full House or Senate, but not both.

He already stated that he has gone much further than required by law in releasing the report.
Trump would wave his pardon power and the fines would disappear.
Requires vote by House or Senate but not both. Well the House is the ones wanting to file contempt charges. I have a bad feeling that Barr will be hit with 20K a day fines until he bends.
“As I understand it, Barr made an unredacted copy available to a group of 12 (6 from each party). Graham and 2 other repubs are the only ones who have bothered to look.”
NOPE.
I don’t think that even the reigning house is that stupid.
NOOE. He is wrong. Don’t point me to anonymous sources.
“The unredacted Mueller Report is available to any Congressperson who wishes to see it ”
WRONG.
“AG. Barr has released the unredacted report in a scure room. “
WRONG.
The Founding Fathers would have hanged them for Treason!
Good grief.
If you have better information, share it. Otherwise you’re just wasting everyone’s time.
“Must remove Barr because hes investigating us ,LOL”
Exactly. They are protecting the Obama regime.
Why do they have to “weigh” fines? Can’t they just use the same amount they fined Holder for with-holding documents, was it?
Oh, wait.
It’s not about being stupid, it’s the fact that they are rabid, they go for the throat. Look at Kavanaugh and now Barr in how they slander, lie, try to humiliate them in front of th media and american people.
They want him questioned by lawyers for a reason- to try and trap him. They want it bad enough they will resort to fining him. I may be wrong, but the way they acted yesterday was unreal.
A contempt order against Barr, because he followed the law in redacting as necessary?
I hope they brong it, the order will be set aside by Federal Court as fast as you can say Needler Nadler.
ROTFLMAO. The ones putting out the fake info are the time wasters. Go rag on them.
Besides, look at what they did today with the fried chicken and ceramic chicken. Now that is really low and stupid.
Isn’t it illegal for him to “provide” an unredacted copy..and can’t they SEE the unredacted copy just by taking a short walk to the doj? Another way that the “news” slants things.
Do these people do any work?
They are either on vacation, on recess, or pulling childish stunts like this.
“As I understand it, Barr made an unredacted copy available to a group of 12 (6 from each party).”
If you have better information, share it. Otherwise youre just wasting everyones time.
