Under Fire, New York Times Finally Apologizes for Antisemitic Cartoon After Days of Failing to Do So

FULL TITLE: Under Fire, New York Times Finally Apologizes for Antisemitic Cartoon After Days of Failing to Do So

The New York Times has finally apologized for printing a blatantly antisemitic cartoon on the opinion pages of its international section last week. The Times ran a cartoon on Thursday showing a blind President Donald Trump, wearing a skullcap, and being led around by Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu–who is portrayed as a dog. The leash and collar on the Netanyahu dog character in the cartoon have a Star of David on it.

It mirrors literal Nazi propaganda against Jews and then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, as some on social media have noted:

The Times‘ decision to print this has come under near-universal criticism from across the media and political spectrum, and in response the Times on Saturday retracted and deleted the cartoon–issuing an editor’s note that did not include an apology.

“A political cartoon in the international print edition of The New York Times on Thursday included anti-Semitic tropes, depicting the prime minister of Israel as a guide dog with a Star of David collar leading the president of the United States, shown wearing a skullcap,” the initial editor’s note on Saturday retracting the image reads. “The image was offensive, and it was an error of judgment to publish it. It was provided by The New York Times News Service and Syndicate, which has since deleted it.”

Still no connection to the shooter in So Cal, who voiced agreement with their (the New York Times and other Democrats) seeming negative vision of Judaism.

If the guy had MEGA tattooed on himself, the connection to Trump would have been made in under 30 seconds, and would have been mentioned for decades.

Big media, big hustle, big avoidance of ownership.

The whole “this guy is in the pay of a foreign power” trope is a recurring theme in all kinds of contexts, and Jews are not the only people targeted by it. It works just as well with the Saudis, the Russians, the Chinese, et al. I think this kind of hyper-sensitivity is counter-productive. Besides, this specific strip has Trump as the owner, and Netanyahu as the dog, which tends to suggest that Netanyahu is at Trump’s beck and call. And calling someone a dog (i.e. Netanyahu) is not generally considered complimentary in many contexts, because of the implication of servility.

An error in judgment? Like too much salt in the soup? Not much of an apology.

Normal disgusting NYT. But on a happier note, which is not to replace the serious note, the Times' description of its own nastiness did bring to memory another media scandal where both Sears and K-Mart stores refused to sell a record album because of the art on the cover:

Bobbi Flekman: Ian, you put a greased naked woman on all fours, with a dog collar around her neck and a leash, and a man's arm extended out up to here holding the leash, and pushing a black glove in her face to sniff it - you don't find that offensive? You don't find that sexist?

Ian Faith: No, I don't! This is 1982, for God's sake...

Bobbi Flekman: That's right it's 1982. Get out of the Sixties. We don't have this mentality any more.

Ian Faith: Well you should have seen the cover they wanted to do. It wasn't a glove, believe me.

Nigel Tufnel: What's wrong with being Sexy?

David St. Hubbins: IST. sex-IST.

The post on this thread did not include the apology....here it is:

“We are deeply sorry for the publication of an anti-Semitic political cartoon last Thursday in the print edition of The New York Times that circulates outside of the United States, and we are committed to making sure nothing like this happens again,” the New York Times said in a statement. The Times continued:

Such imagery is always dangerous, and at a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise worldwide, it’s all the more unacceptable. We have investigated how this happened and learned that, because of a faulty process, a single editor working without adequate oversight downloaded the syndicated cartoon and made the decision to include it on the Opinion page. The matter remains under review, and we are evaluating our internal processes and training. We anticipate significant changes.”

They are cut from the same cloth as the Jews that made the golden calf.

We call them Dathan’s spawn.

Does the dog decide to go to the post office? Or the grocery store?

They try to pin it on one guy but his action speaks to the larger culture at NYT.

The NYT has an anti-semitic culture problem. That’s the real story here.

Our guys should aggressively use this opportunity to demonize and discredit the NYT. That’s what they would do to us. Make them take their own medicine.

...an error of judgment...an error in judgment - I love it - if it hadn't been that, it would have been "taken out of context" or "misinterpreted" - nothing to be concerned about, even though it could be argued that it might have been the touch that set off the nut in California who shot up the synagogue over the weekend - but had some conservative outlet published it, it would have been further confirmation of the deep-seated anti-Semitism of all conservatives and worthy of jail for those who produced it - error in judgment indeed.....
