COLUMBUS, Ohio—A proposed Ohio constitutional amendment to award the state’s presidential electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote has cleared an initial hurdle toward making the statewide ballot this November.

A summary of the proposed amendment was certified by Attorney General Dave Yost on Monday as a “fair and truthful statement of the proposed law,” though Yost didn’t weigh in on whether he supported or opposed the measure.

How is this even legal?

It's not. Won't pass Constitutional muster. This is just all part of the Demoncrat plan to ultimately change the Constitution via Constitutional Convention by ginning up popular support to gain the 2/3 state ratification necessary.

The Democrats are playing long ball here. They know incremental change on this one is the way to go and ultimately they'll probably get their way with people in this country being so f'n stupid that they don't realize they're ceding their votes to larger, more populated states.

Looking back, this is exactly why things like the Constitution aren't taught in schools anymore and the requirement we had (at least here in Illinois) to pass a Constitution Test were requirements to graduate in the 1970's. Not anymore!!

If you think Floriduh in 2000 was a mess, just wait till this **** happens on a national scale. Recount after recount, lawsuit after lawsuit.

Knowing the night of the election who won the election, or even the next day, will be a quaint memory of days past.

It will be absolute chaos that could go on for months.

After Republican Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election (and Ohio) despite losing the popular vote....

He wasn't trying to win the popular vote.

Hillary won a game nobody was playing.

A ballot measure means nothing in this case even if it were to pass. Legislatures appoint electors. Note the word “appoint”. Not “tell them how to vote based on national popular vote”. This sort of compact would disenfranchise entire states and face significant legal challenges.

Hillary won New York and California by over 5.5 million votes. That is more than the entire voter turn out of Ohio. So in theory, 100% of Ohio voters could vote for one president, and all of their votes could go to the other candidate. Why would Ohioans ever accept this?

IIRC, Trump did not spend money in California or NY and got about a third of the vote anyway from the national coverage of the campaign and his tweets.

If Trump puts CA and NY on his rally scheduling list, he can pick up 3-5 mm more votes and win the popular vote.

If that happens, these state changes will be reversed back to the original ways by 2024.

We actually have no way of knowing an accurate count of legal votes.

If we dont hit the streets to protest this, we deserve to lose Ohio. If they get away with it, other states will follow.

Then the socialist will find the popular vote unconstitutional.

Democrats assume Democrats will always win the popular vote so it like money in the bank.

“How is this even legal?”

It isn’t. It’s a symbolic gesture meant to further raise the ire of liberal voters. Funny thing is, Republicans should do the same thing with the 83% of the counties they won in 2016. Just have the county heads say they will give their portion of the electoral vote to whoever wins the county.

Look at it this way. If California with their 58 counties has 24 counties that trump won, Trump should get 42% of the electoral vote. Out of 3007 counties, Trump won 88.09% of them. That means that Trump won 407 of the electoral votes.

Run that at the Democrats and see what they do.

Yeah, I think that’s the main problem. If they believe they can just give away the votes and ignore the will of the voters it isn’t going to end well.

It’s as though they don’t understand this at all. It’s one thing to pass something like this in a loyal blue State, it’s another to pass it in any State that might vote differently against the popular vote.

Wonder if these people have stopped to think there is no such thing as a “national popular vote.” No one counts or certifies a national popular vote for President.

This could make 2020 the year the shooting begins if the left tries this and it changes the outcome.

"I have zero understanding of how this has any appeal at all."

Because of the invasion from the south (aided and supported by the rats) the dimorats are convinced that the popular vote will always go to the rats... So, every stinking rat lawyer in every state will make this move against our Republic.. Completely subverting our constitution by way of a "Loophole"... :(

The 10th and 12th Amendments say so. How the electors are chosen is up to the states.

It’s completely inconceivable to me how or why the people of a state would vote for this. I have zero understanding of how this has any appeal at all.

It's a back-handed way of doing away with the Electoral College by making it meaningless. And they will sell it as that.
