Democratic Gov. John Carney has signed legislation adding Delaware to a group of states pledging to give their Electoral College presidential votes to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of the voters' will in those states.
Carney's approval Thursday makes Delaware the 13th Democratic-leaning state to join the popular-vote compact...

No, that’s a common misperception that’s mainly due to bad reporting. We’ve seen news story after story about Delaware, Colorado etc voting to give away their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote... but the fine print in bills that have been passed is that they’ll do it ONLY if enough other states constituting at least 270 agree to do it too. As such, the compact isn’t in effect unless they get to 270, and they’re not going to get there.
illegal...unconstitutional as you point out so well......, won’t be effective anyway..
its all a publicity stunt trying to make HilLIARy look better on a post-mortem basis
All that says is they need to make a list and submit it. Doesn’t say they have to give a damn about the contents of that list or follow it in any way.
The truth is that Shrillary did not “win” the mythical popular vote. Right leaning candidates received at least 50.07% of the vote. This liberal compact would screw that majority.
But if shoe were on the other foot they would be demanding “justice” for “democratic” and “progressive” voters.
No, not cynical.
Realistic.
I don’t put ANYTHING past the dems in their efforts to steal the elections.
Because there hasn't been an actual case yet.
First, the compact only goes into effect once enough states totalling 270 agree to the compact. So, for now, it's moot. Secondly, those in the contact have to assert the compact before the GOP has grounds to legally challenge it. That can't happen until 2020 at the earliest and more likely in 2024.
Essentially, yep, no matter what your party is. Slates offered pretty much in the hands of the moneyed clique. How otherwise would there be jokers like Biden afloat for years and years? Boting is for those who go through he motions of thinking they belong to something other than a fiefdom.
Wait until one of these states goes Red and the state government tries to award its electoral votes to the Blue candidate. All he!! will break loose.
Thats already being questioned. California believes it should have more senators. I think they may add Puerto Rico and Washington DC and have 4 additional senators. Thats the chatter.
If there is a national popular then it should be a requirement for each citizen casting a ballot to prove their citizenship with proper documentation when registering. In addition a mandatory photo ID will be required upon entering the polling place.
Also did the founders of this idea think of the backlash when a states electoral votes are awarded to the candidate with the least number of votes?
Reminds me of the situation a few years back when Scott Brown was running for the senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy. The Dems had previously changed the law from the governor appointing a replacement to a special election. Their rationale being that the people should do the selection. Of course this was during 2004 election and at that time there was a republican governor who would appoint Kerry’s replacement if he had been elected. Fast forward to Ted Kennedy passing away and now there was a democrat governor. Unfortunately for them they had pissed off so many of the voters with their hypocrisy that they had to allow the special election.
“In Delaware your vote means nothing...” is an absolutely true statement and the reason the original small state framers like Delaware argued for a republic and electoral college. The small states feared exactly what the Delaware legislators have now voted in. They obviously didn’t look at Constitutional history in their deliberations.
So Delaware decided to make.itself even more irrelevant?
“Imagine the legal gymnastics to have this overturned after the 2020 election results come in and Trump gets popular vote.”
I don’t think those states will have to worry about that. With California, Illinois, NY, and New England, the popular vote will most likely always be with the Dems.
The Electoral Collage, now, is the only way a Repub will win the White House for the foreseeable future.
Ditto to that.
The way I understand it, because the statement has to do with popular vote overall it does not tie it to a particular state. Therefore its not a compact of states.
I think they will come to regret itsometime after the third or fourth Californian President.
Bulwyf wrote, “The war is coming, lets just get this going already.”
Couldn’t agree more. Let’s get it over with.
The Constitution directs the states to allocate electors as they wish. You knew that, right?
That is a great point. I imagine it would fall on the certified vote as designated by the state.
And do we include the votes of Territories?
Yes, but not to overturn our Constitution in the process.
The electors are to reflect the majority of their state, not the majority in the nationwide election.
Delaware is deep blue with a 22% minority population and no Republicans in any statewide office. We are also awash in NJ refugees who bring their failed state beliefs with them in too many cases. We are doomed, but as of yet, don’t have a sales tax so, there’s that.......
