Meatless Mondays matter: In praise of New York City schools overhauling their menus once a week
By Jessica Scott-Reid Mar 12, 2019 | 10:25 AM
Building on a major expansion this past fall, Mayor de Blasio just announced that Meatless Mondays will be in public schools across the nations largest city starting next academic year.
Not surprisingly, immediate online reactions ignited increasingly common debates over the consumption of animal products, from concerns about forcing vegetarianism on children, to calls to remove dairy as well. Ultimately though, eliminating meat from school meals one day a week is a positive and necessary move, and it's something all school districts should consider.
Talking with one young student, Elah, de Blasio said he asked the fourth grader what she thought of going meat-free for breakfast and lunch once a week, and quoted her reply: Its good for the environment, and its good for you yourself.
Elah is correct, and her response offers proof that not only do Meatless Mondays teach children about food, but also about the impact of their food choices. Every day, it seems, science shines more light on the alarming connection between animal agriculture and climate chaos: not only the production of greenhouse gas emissions, but also unsustainable water and land usage, and major loss of wildlife and biodiversity. Its high time future generations learn what they are up against, and what they can do about it. And dropping meat for two meals a week is a great place to start.

The Catholic church should just go back to no meat on Fridays! :-)
De Blasio has certainly been working hard to screw up NY. They are going broke and now they cannot pay for food for the kids is what is going on here.
Eat recycled food. Its good for the environment and ok for you.
Schools are not indoctrination centers - that the Democrats use them as such is disgusting and must be abolished. Worse - there are many children with dietary needs that NEED animal protein and abolishing this, even fornone day, is detrimental to their health for their sake of ideological purity.
DeBlasio needs to be tarred and feathered and taken out of office.
Well considering the meat the schools serve.
Bet they’re just using the mystery meat money for something else....
Bill BlowJobio, however, will have meat whenever he wants.
Rules are for the little people.
Stupid commie swine.
If they had half a brain theyd try to push it for Friday day. Its lent and NYC is full of Catholics. But no. They hate religion so much that they would cut off their noses to spite their commie faces.
Think Ill move back my corned beef St Patricks Day feast to Monday.

Should be meatless Fridays. Mondays make no sense at all.
“there are many children with dietary needs that NEED animal protein and abolishing this, even fornone day, is detrimental to their health for their sake of ideological purity.”

So their parents can pack them a lunch that includes meat-this is no big deal.
.
No Meat, I don’t eat, you get beat!
Hmmmm....wonder if NYC spends more on emoloyee labor and benefits per meal than it does on the food...
Back in the day we Catholics observed meatless Fridays. The one day the church said never mind.
That’s the way it goes with religions.
Can the kids bring ham sandwiches in their lunch boxes?
Disgusting to have children choosing food based on “good for the environment”. Recycling was “good for the environment” too except decades later we find that it isn’t, no one will buy it & it’s filling landfills. Just one more in a series of lies off loaded to the innocent & trusting to promote a political agenda.

I much prefer meatloaf Mondays.
We are slaves to the system and no one complains
not to worry, New Yorker’s can begin importing Balut from Manila for the kid’s Monday lunches
The alliteration doesn’t work if you make it “Meatless Fridays” its gotta be “Meatless Mondays” or “Freakless Fridays”, which would open up a whole different can of worms.
