Amazon Spokesperson Blames Ocasio-Cortez for NYC Retreat

The progressive congresswoman fielded intense backlash after the shocking cancellation of the company's planned second headquarters

An Amazon spokesperson blamed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and her vocal resistance for the company’s shocking decision to cancel plans for its New York City headquarters on Thursday.

Polls showed that 70 percent of New Yorkers supported Amazon’s planned investment in the state.

Thus, Amazon stunned many New Yorkers and the nation at large when the company bowed to intense opposition from some state and local officials on Thursday and announced it was abandoning the Big Apple for its second headquarters.

“For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term,” Amazon said in a statement.

But “a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City,” the company admitted.

Jodi Seth, Amazon’s head of policy communications, told NBC News that same day the company blamed a few specific New York politicians for its decision.

“It wasn’t any one incident,” Seth noted. “It was that the environment over the course of the past three months had not got[ten] any better. There were some local and state elected officials who refused to meet with Amazon and criticized us day in and day out about the plan.”

“If you talk to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it’s ‘Never Amazon,'” Seth added. “If you talk to [New York City Councilman Jimmy] Van Bramer [a Democrat], it’s unions.”

Ironic that socialism, which relies on a vibrant capitalism to generate funds for it’s socialist pogroms, also does it’s best to crush the capitalism that feeds it....and that she thinks that a perfect example in Venezuela is not relevant.

” Her district had almost nothing to gain by it, and lots to lose”

Really, 25,000 jobs and millions in local revenue and there was nothing to gain??

I know your post some really dumb anti-American and anti-capitalist garbage on FR, but this one tops them all.

Why should Amazon get a tax break that other employers in NY do not get? Seems unfair to me, crony capitalism is when gov tilts the playing field to favor one over the others.

I've explained this elsewhere. AOC's constituents are more likely to be working by the existing businesses that are going to be displaced by Amazon.

That’s funny!

My point was that part of “fake news” is what they DON’T report - and I’m sure after they showed clips/interviews that were 5% activists celebrating and 95% actual residents and business owners very downtrodden or at least very concerned, they were told to drop it altogether. For NY state, NYC, and Long Island City, this was a very big deal; Governor Cuomo had recently started this “NY is open for business” campaign because they are losing so many jobs and taxpayers, and this just trashed that whole narrative.

I wouldn’t be shocked if this Cortez dope is voted out in 2020 (while the media can drum up “appeal” for her, in the end it is voters in her district who determine who represents them); while I didn’t think it was a big deal initially, it appears the anger and concern in that area is palpable (I’ve read that as many as 70% of the residents supported Amazon moving in) - and she doesn’t even represent that area (her district is next to it). We’ll see how this plays out; the problem for her is that the area is dying a slow, but noticeable, death.

I think a lot of Freepers don't realize that the Amazon deal was exactly the kind of thing used to justify the infamous Kelo Supreme Court decision. The same people who get on here and complain about WalMart's impact on local businesses have no trouble with Amazon doing the same thing ... and getting tax breaks while doing it.

And Amazon instituted a minimum wage of 15 an hour. Walmart is still at 11.

NYC already has a minimum wage of $15 that will be in place by the end of this year. This wasn’t going to be an Amazon warehouse. It was going to be a regional headquarters where hardly anyone is going to be paid less than $80,000/year.

They should move to Broome County, NY. Major intersection of route 81 and I86/ny route 17. I 81 connets with I 90 and also is a straight shot to Canada. No major NYC style traffic jams. Broome has a major university there and a top notch 2 year school. Syracuse University is an hour north. Over all costs would be drastically lower. Plus Amazon should do it just to slam NYC by building in an even more depressed NY state area!

I’ve done a bit of work up in that area over the years. How many current or prospective Amazon employees would want to live in Binghamton or Johnson City? Probably very, very few.

Good - let’s scream it from the rooftops that AOC is killing businesses and hurting the very people she purports to want to save from The Man.

Like the end moniker in your post.

Taking on “ The Man” is how the Dems keep the freebie crowd dependent upon them. They phrase their opposition in language that sounds like a “ reasonable” alternative, but is just designed to fool people as they have no real intention of solving problems that affect the greater population.

Border wall, security, schooling to just name a few....

They count on those that feel they can’t stand up to “ The Man” to weasel word their way to the latest entitlement, and don’t think at all about improving their lives...

AOC is the perfect example of what you get when this mentality takes over.

So Cortez was expressing a thrill over a $4.3 billion that is now nothing but vapor, and not recognizing at all the other $26 billion the state just lost.

She’s just not capable of grasping these dynamics.

And the media will never call her out on this. But let The Donald say “ I didn’t have to do this” in the context of declare an emergency if Congress did its job, and they will parrot that he admitted the National Emergency is a FAKE....

Disgusting..

A lot of NYC people take their retirements there(cops on disability, ect). The school systems are good. Amazon could probably get all their employees just from the Grads from the local college there and from Syracuse ect. IBM originated from that area and there are very few “ethnic” strife issues there though Binghamton Court street area has issues with drugs. It wouldn’t take much for Amazon employees to make Broome County into the type of place they would like to live in. Binghamton has one of the top 10 regional Opera companies(Tri Cities Opera) as well as a very good local Symphony. There is a local group that does Gilbert and Sullivan operettas every summer. The Cider Mill playhouse is a noted amateur theater group(operates off season when the cider presses aren’t processing local apples for cider). I grew up in that area. I know what Broome County could deliver. They have developed areas at the Kirkwood industrial area in the town of Kirkwood and Conklin that Amazon could very well utilize. The county boasts the largest number of working carousels that were gifted from the EJ shoe company from early in the last century. If nothing else, the Amazon employees will come for the locally made Speidis!(if you have worked in that area, you’ll know what speidis are!) Wegmans sells the Endicott/locally made Salamida speidi marinade even down here in Richmond(Wegmans is also in Johnson City, NY) Va.

Yeah I doubt Amazon would even look at Broome County seriously but I would award brass gilding to the gonads of the politicians in Broome who at least didn’t try to get an audience with Herr Bezos!

Amazon's NYC headquarters location was supposed to have 25,000 people working there. I believe they already employ about 5,000 in NYC, so that leaves about 20,000 new or relocated staff they'd have to hire.

I seriously doubt the Binghamton area could provide anything close to 20,000 skilled workers for Amazon's IT and administrative operations.

The area up there is awesome in its own right, though. I was working up there right around the time Maines was consolidating their multiple locations into that massive new distribution center in Kirkwood, and got a first-hand look at how ideal it is for a major regional distribution center serving the northeastern U.S. and much of eastern Canada.
