Washington (CNN)Virginia GOP Speaker Kirk Cox expressed skepticism on Monday that the legislature should try to force Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam out of office, highlighting a potential constitutional impasse the commonwealth could face should Northam decline to step down.
"I think there's a rightful hesitation about removal from office, because obviously you have to consider that to some degree you're overturning an election," Cox said. "I think the constitutional provisions are very specific on the succession of office. It really does call for mental or physical incapacitation. That's what it was meant to do."
Pressure has grown on Northam to resign since revelations about a racist photo on his yearbook page and an ensuing news conference where he admitted to darkening his face to look like Michael Jackson for a dance competition. The governor has said he will not step down, and a source told CNN that Northam argued in a Cabinet meeting on Monday that he would be labeled a "racist for life" if he accepted the wide-ranging calls for him to step down. Cox, who leads the GOP-controlled Virginia House of Delegates, said Monday they had opted to call for his resignation because of the "high standard" required in Virginia for impeachment.
According to Virginia professor A.E. Dick Howard, no Virginia governor has ever been removed from office via impeachment, although the Virginia Constitution provides such a mechanism.

Yes, whatever happens he will always have the shame of being a pediatric neurologist/governor who thinks it is mighty fine to kill babies whenever it is possible.
I typed Ralph Northam black face into google.com and there were multiple copies of the picture in the first row of images returned.
Except he and the other Demonrats are continuing to redistrict. We need him out of there.
Virginia’s governor is elected in the off-years for four years and is not eligible for re-election immediately.

He is in an interesting position.
With a lack of political backing from his own party, he will have little leverage. It would be “best for Virginia” (and the Democratic Party) if he resigned. It would be a PC twofer: 1) Northam is punished for being a sophomoric graduate student 35 years ago and 2) (Bonus) because the Democrat Lieutenant Governor conveniently is a black man, a big helping of poetic justice is served as well.
It will be interesting to see how he governs if he decides to stay (which I hope he does). He may have to form some sort of alliance with the Republicans to get legislation passed. Republican power will increase to the dismay of Democrats. That may make the virtue signaling Democrats reconsider making a sitting Democratic governor an outcast.
The reasons I hope he stays are two fold:
1. PC-offenses (especially as long ago as these occurred) don’t get to cancel the votes of millions of Virginians.
2. Break the cycle of quitting/running away as the standard political reaction to offending the ever-shifting morals of the PC/virtue signaling crowd.
It will take courage on Northam’s part to stay. I hope the “does the right thing for Virginia” (and the nation) by sticking it out. This crap needs to end. Maybe it can start here.
After convincing a large segment of Virginia Republicans that Ed Gillespie was a member of the alt.right and President Trump needed to be taught a lesson.
I don’t see the problem. Setting aside the comments lauding post birth aabortion, the governor clearly was guilty of the preelection mental incapacitation demonstrated by the blackface photo.

Sorry, I looked it up at above link and I still don’t understand “rasterize”. What will it do to change the appearance of the original image? Thanks.
Yep. He makes for a nice optic when people accuse Trump of being a racist
The plan is to make it unlawful to use the picture. It will be deleted every time it is used. Also the use of the word “Coonman”.
The Nazi Doctors are alive and well amongst us.
Are you sure you want to go down the road of impeachment for someone advocating an opinion (no matter how despicable) for which you disagree?
I’m using a Trump phone and suspect they shadow ban me from time to time...
lot of conservatives in VA. the northern parts control senate and Gov races. Vast majority in other parts voted against coonman
Sessions is the most current living example attesting to the truth of the “Peter Principle”
“Are you sure you want to go down the road of impeachment for someone advocating an opinion (no matter how despicable) for which you disagree?”
Not really, but I do think we should play on the same level as Democrats, and they certainly wouldn’t hesitate to throw out a Republican over something they disagree with, like Trump winning the White House.
I don’t know what happened on my previous post. What I meant to say is that I agree that the republicans should push for his resignation, but not attempt to use a vehicle like impeachment to do so.
