Senate Democrats blocked a White House backed-plan to end the 34-day partial shutdown, turning it down in a 51-47 vote on Thursday.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) joined with Republicans to advance the measure, but it fell short of the 60 votes needed to defeat a filibuster.
In an unexpected development, Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) voted against Trump's plan. Lee is considered a fiscal hawk and Cotton is one of the Senates most conservative members on immigration.
The Senate is expected to hold a second vote Thursday on a continuing resolution (CR) that would fund the quarter of the government currently closed until Feb. 8. That bill is also expected to fail, though a few Republicans have said they will support it.

or at least make the ones calling for a filibuster get up there and talk 24/7..
the 60 vote grid lock is insane.
I am just generally frustrated with our government.
I expect this crap (the current crap going on in government) from democrats.
I however did NOT expect this crap from Republicans.
Whenever a bill fails like this, I usually don’t criticize individual senators very much over their votes because the result was a foregone result anyway.
Soylent Green New Deal.
She did not include that in her speech because it might prove too shocking and tend to dry up the source ... Shush, don’t banter that around or you might be someone’s fine dining ...
What I dont understand is why we didnt get the funding when we had the house majority. I know Ryan was being a bad guy. But couldnt we have gone around him some way? We are going around Pelosi so why not Ryan?
The President wont sign a spending bill without it. Everyone knew that 34 days ago and nothing has changed since on that front.*******
Actually, its been a lot longer than 34 days. It’s been several months. When Congress passed a temporary bill...roughly a year ago, Trump told them THEN, to get cracking on a real budget, and make sure there was money for a wall. He told them he would not sign another temporary budget. They’ve known all this time what they needed to do.
And the Nan Louse...ya she’s a louse...has been, or trying to galavant all over the world with her buddies, on pleasure trips, instead of doing her job.
As far as I am concerned, she needs to be brought up on sedition charges along with those who follow and obey her.
And then, cut that 1/3 of non necessary government out of the government.
And ine more thing...pull any more pay checks for Congress until this mess is dealt with appropriately.
They want the President to uphold the laws of the constitution, and even filed impeachment papers a couple of weeks ago for failure to do so, yet they refuse him the means for carrying out those duties.
Hummm, maybe that’s why they wont budge. They intend to see him out the door.
at least they did their jobs. they weren’t off jerking it someplace like little dr. nutz, the senior senator from msnbc.
“Trumps waiting for something before he makes his move. Im not sure exactly what it is. One possibility is that hes waiting for RGBs retirement or death to be announced. Why would that matter? He wants to ensure that he will win any legal challenge when he declares a national emergency.”
I agree. Ruth Buzzi Ginsburg has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Having a sure 5-4 on the SC could well be playing into Trump’s strategy. (As we all know, Roberts is completely untrustworthy.)
Lamar Alexander has already said he will not run for re-election. He’s on a suicide mission like Flake.
The first 2 years the republicans did not control the senate. With Mitch in there, you need 60 to control the senate.
And THEN the 60 need to be all non-establishment Republicans. This is all our fault. Not Trumps. The voter need more than the president to get all this done. Duhhhh. Its so silly when I hear someone go, this is Trumps fault. No dummy.
In the Thursday vote, Mitt Romney also joined the Democrats, and it makes sense the other guy from Utah voted the same. I think eminent domain may be one of the issues. Some ranchers and farmers along the border don’t want their land seized especially if it block access to water. I am a little confused as to why President Trump thinks the wall already built has helped San Antonio which is more than 100 miles from the wall. Also, the wall does nothing to help stop the drugs and other things crossing the border at urban check points if only one in five vehicles is checked. There are appropriate places for a wall, but much more needs to be spent on vehicle entry by road and by sea, and checking out the 3/4 million overstayed visa people.
We need to call our Congress critters and tell them to suspend their pay and that of the President and the Cabinet until the 800,000 workers get their pay.
We need to call our Congress critters and tell them to suspend their pay
*************
That’s an excellent suggestion. However, given the scarcity of integrity in the U.S. congress its unlikely that will ever happen. Remember, they are there for themselves, not us.

We don’t want our land invaded, which is the larger issue. I get your points but the overriding concern is stopping the flood of people pouring into our country. The costs of this invasion (in financial, social, legal, and cultural terms) are becoming an existential threat. We cannot ENDLESSLY absorb large segments of Latin and South America, much less the people sneaking in from other countries.
In short, concerns over eminent domain are insignificant compared to the larger issue of protecting Americans. Its like worrying about the paint on a building when the structure is crumbling.
As far as Mitt Romney is concerned, watch his votes. I can assure you this won’t be the only time he joins the Democrats.
Shutdown will continue
****************
It will stop the moment congress finds out they can’t fly back to their home districts without delays and re-routes because of absences of air traffic controllers. At they point they will suddenly find a solution.
Congress is all about congress.
This president hasn’t taken one penny for his services to this point.
