RALEIGH -- A software error caused public school students around North Carolina to receive incorrect end-of-term grades this school year, state education officials said.
The Department of Public Instruction said it has been advising districts about the problem with PowerSchool software since December, after many schools sent home first-quarter report cards. The error could have affected as many as 109 school districts and 59 charter schools in the state, but it's not clear exactly how many students were impacted.

The department initially thought the rounding problem was limited to grades ending in certain decimal points, but Elliot said state officials are now hearing the problem extends to other numbers as well.

If the actual grades rather than curved grades were released, taxpayers would revolt in shock and horror.
Buy our software!!! It will make your failing schools and mindless students LOOK GOOD!!!!
There is no such thing as a "software error", and everyone knows it.
And, one suspects that no grades were actually "rounded down".
.
Way back long ago (decades) I did the attendance counting stuff for them. My fundamental insight was that all the schools wanted a way to fudge the numbers and make the count come out to what they needed it to be.
Nobody in management wanted to hear that kind of heresy. ;-)
No, Dad, I really did bring my math grade up from a 60 to 98.
My long-time (and rather jaded) math teacher sister immediately said that there was no error...they got CAUGHT trying to improve grades so the schools and school district would get better evaluations. She said they should check how many grades were rounded DOWN rather than UP.
Knowing how desperate school districts are to report improved performance, I’d wager she’s right.
Man I love Michael Bolton.
I have all of his albums.
Have you seen my red stapler?
Software probably uses a diversity corrected algorithm. Whites and Asians rounds down, others round up.
that would average out.
Not is heavily minority areas. Anyway I was just kidding.
My grandson got all A’s and one B. Then later his mom received an email saying the previous grade reports were problematic.
I don’t know how it turned out. Too soon to know
He mad others look bad?
There is the possibility that others actually made him look good.
Hadn’t thought of it quite that way, but yes.
