The president's shift in policy has been portrayed as a surprisebut America's foreign-policy machinery was quietly tasked with preparing for it months ago.

From 2011 and for the seven years that followed, the experts have been telling us that Assads days were numbered, that he was finished, even when it became obvious that wasnt going to happen; it was a fairytale, Middle East analyst Geoffrey Aronson said. The result is that we were reduced to playing the role of spoiler. Listen, there are lots of reasons to not like Trump, but this was the right policy move to make. Our agreement with the Kurds was always temporary, and they knew it. So now they will do what theyve been quietly talking about for the last two years: Theyll seek an accommodation with Damascus.

Theres no question that Trumps withdrawal decision has roiled official Washington, spurring the resignations of Mattis and McGurk, but the end-of-the-world scenario painted by Trumps chorus of criticsthat the Mattis resignation would be followed by many others, for examplehas not happened. The reason might well be that there are many more officials in the foreign-policy establishment who agree with what Trump has doneand that, perhaps, the job of restraining some of Trumps worst instincts shouldnt be left in the hands of Americas generals.

So I see on the news this morning that Bolton is warning the Syrian government against the use of poison gas attacks. Not this crap again! Is the stage being set for yet another FAKE, false flag gas attack? The main group of Islamists in Turkey today are the militias operating under Islamist Turk protection and occupation.
The “blob”? Are we using that as a new term for the msm?
I searched in vain for Michael Moores name in the article.
Fake or not, we Americans will have to harden ourselves to worldwide savages gassing children and burning people in cages. Those who decry “moral imperatives” will have to find financing elsewhere. As a baby-boomer child of a WWII vet, I once thought we should continue with the world stewardship but we don’t nation build now. We can no longer afford it, nor do we have the stamina for such undertakings any longer and so many are quite sick of being played as the world’s suckers.
Americans are no good at nation-building. We don’t like to stay in the nations we build, unlike the Brits and Europeans. We like to go home. We ought to recognize this but Washington never does.
I think we could build nations, but we simply don’t have the STOMACH for it, and even if our leaders did, they’d be jailed in Europe for taking the necessary steps (such as torturing and then killing leftists/terrorists and their families, taking down entire towns and cities that ‘resist’, etc.).
So, it’s not really money, but it doesn’t matter - you’re right, we can no longer do it.
Bolton, and his fellow neocons, need to be concerned with the load of walking crap that was sworn into congress last Thursday rather than Assad.
It’s un-American that we should be a nation running around the world torturing and murdering in the name of nation building. There simply is no need for us to do that inn order for us to build a nice life here. We aren’t the third reich.
He must have been talking with his British counterparts again. Britain runs the chemical weapons false flag projects in Syria through their Sunni jihadist cutouts.
Humanitarian intervention might work some places. But the real issue is that we arent dealing with nations in the Middle East - we are dealing with countries arbitrarily created by the UK or France which dont represent coherent polities. Iraq and Syria should be partitioned along ethnic lines and Kurdistan should be our biggest ally in the ME
Career government workers don’t give up their gravy train too easy. Expecting a wave of sympathetic resignations was not an intelligent expectation.
The reality is (as BobL basically said) that for over 3000 years, people who wanted to "nation build" were basically setting up empires. And the way you do that is to torture your opponents, wipe out entire villages, and take people (men, women, children) into absolute slavery (in mines, in fields, in households, etc.). If you want to subdue a population and re-construct a society into something which is more to your own liking, that's how you do it. The Assyrians knew. The Egyptians knew. The Romans knew. Hitler was basically following the old precedent.
But today, all of that stuff is frowned upon (as it should be).
So anyone (America) who tries to "nation build" without doing any of that, is just going to do a terrible job, and basically waste time, lives and treasure.
Lession: Do not "nation build".
When you understand that the goal of Islam is to kill / enslave all infidels; when they’re gone, they turn against each other. People who read history understand this.
Communism and its tentacles should have been completely destroyed during WWII when we had a chance.
They extracted their price as long as it was economical, but in return they introduced the advantages of modern governance, if only the indigenous people would take what they were given and keep it. Some did, some didnt.
The problematic countries of the MidEast actively reject this for ideological and religious reasons, and no amount of financial aid or military advisors will change that.
Should have listened to Patton? (or at least George C. Scott playing Patton)
Bolton is trying to sabotage Trump’s decision.
Bolton is trying to induce his al Qadea buddies in Syria to use chems to frame the Syrian govt again.
It’s getting tiresome. Fire him already.

Nonsense. What are you, a Democrat? Bolton is one of the few loyal staffers POTUS has. While the likes of Mattis, McMaster and Kelly publicly backstabbed POTUS Bolton has remained a team player.
Very well said, hb.
